I got a call at 6:30 in the morning from a charter pilot in a private lot near Carpinteria State Beach. He had a 2016 Porsche Cayman, a preflight check he couldn't skip, and a smart key that had gone completely dark overnight.
The car wouldn't unlock. Wouldn't respond to the fob at all. He'd already tried holding the key up near the door handle, which is the right instinct, but nothing happened.
I was there in about 25 minutes. First thing I did was get inside mechanically using the physical door lock, which is what you do when the electronics are completely unresponsive. Once I was in, I connected through the OBD port. The fob battery was dead - CR2032, fully discharged - but that wasn't the whole story. His vehicle battery had been replaced recently, and when that happened, the keyless system lost the fob's registration. So he had two separate problems stacked on top of each other, which is exactly why the fob-near-the-column trick hadn't worked either.
I swapped the CR2032, re-registered the key through the diagnostic port, and walked every function: lock, unlock, proximity detection at the door handles, and start. Everything came back clean.
He was pulling into the hangar by 7:15. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him the last time he needed key work on a previous car. It was a lot. He said this was way less, and he still made his flight.
