2016 Porsche Cayman
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you're not a scam locksmith?

Ask for a license number before anyone rolls. In California, every locksmith is required to carry a BSIS license and give you the number on request. Ask for a written, itemized estimate for your specific vehicle before work starts, and get the company name. On a Porsche, the price for key work is what it is - the equipment, the credentials, and the time are real costs. If a quote sounds implausibly low, that's the signal.

Q: Will a replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. When we're done, the replacement key is fully registered to your 2016 Cayman - proximity detection, lock, unlock, and the other buttons on the five-button fob. We test every function before we leave the job. One thing worth knowing: fob registration on this platform is tied to the vehicle's security system, not just stored on the key itself. That means a replacement key purchased online won't do anything until it's properly enrolled through a diagnostic connection.

Q: My car battery died and now my Cayman won't recognize the smart key at all. Are they connected?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get on this generation of Porsche. The keyless system stores fob registration data in a way that can be disrupted when the vehicle battery loses power completely - especially if the battery drained slowly over time rather than being swapped cleanly with memory-saver tools in place. The result looks like a dead fob or a failed key, but the fob itself is fine.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it programmed?

Sometimes, but verify the factory FCC ID on the fob matches before you buy. There are aftermarket fobs listed for this vehicle that look right physically but won't register correctly. If the part doesn't match, the programming session still costs you time and the fob is useless. Easier move: call us first. We source the right fob and handle the registration in one visit.

2016 Porsche Cayman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call at 6:30 in the morning from a charter pilot in a private lot near Carpinteria State Beach. He had a 2016 Porsche Cayman, a preflight check he couldn't skip, and a smart key that had gone completely dark overnight.

The car wouldn't unlock. Wouldn't respond to the fob at all. He'd already tried holding the key up near the door handle, which is the right instinct, but nothing happened.

I was there in about 25 minutes. First thing I did was get inside mechanically using the physical door lock, which is what you do when the electronics are completely unresponsive. Once I was in, I connected through the OBD port. The fob battery was dead - CR2032, fully discharged - but that wasn't the whole story. His vehicle battery had been replaced recently, and when that happened, the keyless system lost the fob's registration. So he had two separate problems stacked on top of each other, which is exactly why the fob-near-the-column trick hadn't worked either.

I swapped the CR2032, re-registered the key through the diagnostic port, and walked every function: lock, unlock, proximity detection at the door handles, and start. Everything came back clean.

He was pulling into the hangar by 7:15. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him the last time he needed key work on a previous car. It was a lot. He said this was way less, and he still made his flight.

Porsche Cayman Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Porsche vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state body that regulates locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance and hold NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credentials. That last part matters on a 2016 Cayman specifically. Re-registering a smart key on this vehicle goes through the OBD port and involves the vehicle's security system - it's not a button sequence or an ignition trick.
