2011 Porsche Cayman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a text on a Saturday afternoon from someone parked near the stables off the edge of Concha Loma in Carpinteria. He had a 2011 Porsche Cayman and a fob that had taken a full drop into arena sand earlier that day. The car was sitting on a gravel lot and he was going nowhere.
He dropped me a pin. I loaded up for the Cayman and drove out.
When I got there he handed me the fob and it was packed. Fine grit had worked into the seam where the two halves of the housing meet, and more of it had gotten inside around the board. He said it had been acting spotty for a few weeks before that, and the drop was just the thing that killed it the rest of the way.
I opened it on the hood of my van. The board had corrosion on two of the contact points and one of the internal clips was cracked. That explained the weeks of intermittent behavior before the final failure. The CR2032 itself was fine.
I transferred the relevant data from the old unit, set up a fresh fob shell and board, and paired it to the vehicle on site. Then I walked every function: proximity detection approaching the door, the ignition recognition, and each button. Everything answered.
He asked what the dealer would have done. Honestly, the nearest Porsche dealer would have had him tow it in, wait for a parts order, and come back for a separate programming appointment. He was back in his car that afternoon, on a gravel lot next to a horse barn, for a fraction of what that route would have cost.
