Lexus brought the NX to market with smart-key proximity from day one. 2015-2017 NX runs a 4-button fob with an ID46 transponder, FCC ID HYQ14FBA, and a folded laser-cut emergency blade. Registration demands a scan tool through OBD-II; no shortcut and no DIY route on this generation.
First Gen Mature: Pro Keybox Window
Same smart key platform on the 2018-2020 NX, with one new wrinkle: the Pro Keybox kit becomes a viable programming path when a working key is present. Still the HYQ14FBA fob, still an ID46 chip, still four buttons and a CR2032. The security stack did not change, just the tooling options.
Second Gen Redesign: AZ20
The redesigned NX got an updated smart key system with reinforced security, though the form factor stayed familiar: 4-button proximity fob, CR2032 cell, folded laser-cut emergency blade. On-board pairing handles most configurations, but some specific security modules may still force dealer involvement.
Current NX: Server-Based Authentication
The newest NX models may layer server authentication on top of the scan-tool requirement, which means the car phones home to Lexus before accepting a fresh key. We handle many of these at the curb, but we VIN-check first. Yours needs dealer-only server access, you hear that before we leave the shop.
Identify Your NX Smart Key

The CR2032 in your NX fob runs three to four years. Once it fades, signal weakens and the car detects the fob inconsistently. Swap the cell yourself for a couple bucks at any North Park drugstore. Fresh CR2032 and nothing, the electronics are likely cooked.
Transponder Programming Failures with Aftermarket Tools
