I got a call from a woman parked in her garage off Fletcher Cove. She had a 2025 Lexus NX and a fob that had seen better days. The rubber on two of the four buttons was worn through, the shell had a hairline crack running up one side, and the slot where the emergency blade lives had loosened up enough that the blade would shift around when she grabbed her keys.

When I got there, I popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The circuit board and transponder chip inside were completely intact. No corrosion, no damage, nothing wrong with the electronics at all. The shell was just done. I moved her working internals into a fresh housing, replaced the button covers, reseated the CR2032, and verified the emergency blade fit and cut before locking it back in.
Then the part that matters: full function test. Touch unlock on both handles, start button response, all four fob buttons, emergency blade in the lock cylinder. Everything behaved the way it should.
She kept her original electronics, had a fob that felt new again, and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted for a whole new unit. The dealer wasn't wrong that a new fob would have solved it. They just didn't look close enough to see that she didn't need one.
