J150 Era: Smart Key Arrives
Lexus moved the GX 460 to a proximity smart key with push-button start. ID46 chip riding the Lexus Smart Key System, fob stays in your pocket while the door handles read it through the antenna ring. Four buttons, laser-cut emergency blade, CR2032 power. Pairing requires Techstream-grade tooling, which our van carries every day.
J250 Era: GA-F Platform GX 550
The newest GX shares the GA-F skeleton with the Land Cruiser. Still ID46 chip, still four buttons on the smart key, but Lexus added server authentication into the programming chain. That makes it dealer-only access today. We tell you that up front and help you avoid getting price-gouged on the dealer side.

Transponder Chip Failure
Your 2003-2009 GX 470 cranks but does not catch, or fires and dies. The Texas 4D chip in the key head is aging out. Chips degrade and the immobilizer kills spark once it cannot read. We clone or replace on-site, usually under 30 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Bad fob circuit on a 2010-2023 GX 460 drains CR1632 cells in weeks. Buying cells constantly and push-button only sometimes works? The board is the issue, not the cell. We measure current curbside; bad board, we cut and program on the spot.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
GX 460 in Rancho Bernardo or Mira Mesa not starting after a battery swap? First check is ECU sync. When the 12V drops out the ECU loses handshake with the smart keys. Nothing broken, just needs a Techstream relearn. About 20 minutes and you are running.
Proximity Sensor Failure
Owners blame the smart key when a door-handle proximity sensor failed. The salt-air corridor through Coronado and Del Mar accelerates corrosion. Fob is fine, battery is fine, but the car cannot see the key on handle grab. We diagnose sensor vs fob curbside.
DIY a Lexus GX Key? Reality Check
Yes, with at least one working master in hand. The GX 470 supports a pedal-sequence routine to add a transponder key, accelerator and brake with tight timing. Remote pairing runs through a separate door-cylinder cycle. Neither path works for all-keys-lost.
No DIY route on the GX 460. The smart key system requires Techstream or an Autel IM608 for any registration, add-key or all-keys-lost, full stop.
No DIY and no standard locksmith path for now. The GX 550 needs Lexus server authentication for programming, which is dealer-only access at the moment.
