2018 Lexus GX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was already working in Escondido on a Saturday night when the call came in from Old Escondido. A couple had walked out of an evening near the historic district and the GX wasn't responding to the fob at all.
No door handle touch unlock, no response to the lock or unlock buttons, nothing. They thought it was a dead fob battery and had already tried clicking it a hundred times. One of them found me online and I was there in under fifteen minutes.
When I pulled up, the fob battery was in fact dead. Simple enough. But after a fresh CR1632 went in and I reseated the contact, the fob came back on partially. Lock worked. Unlock didn't. Driver door handle touch wasn't waking the car either.
That pattern told me something. The fob itself was reading correctly through my programmer, the key was registered and the immobilizer was happy, so the issue wasn't the key at all. The body wireless receiver on the driver side was just not picking up the unlock signal reliably at normal range. Holding the fob about six inches from the door handle triggered it every time. Classic near-field workaround for a degraded receiver.
I walked them through what was happening, showed them the close-range trick would get them home and through the week, and documented the receiver finding so they'd know exactly what to tell the shop. They drove home that night instead of leaving the GX on the street until Monday.
The fob was never the problem. Knowing where to look is the whole job.
