Lexus LS Key Tech Generation by Generation
XF20: Pure Transponder
OBD-II registration keeps this generation straightforward for us. The LS400 carried an ID33 transponder chip molded into a high-security blade. No remote buttons, no proximity, no push button. Twist in the ignition, the chip handshakes with the immobilizer, the engine fires.
XF30: Remote Head Key
On-board pairing makes the XF30 the most accessible LS for fast curb work. The LS430 runs a 4D68 chip inside a 3-button remote head key with a high-security blade and a CR1616 cell. The buttons handle lock, unlock, trunk; the transponder talks to the engine ECU. A PIN code is required to program, which we pull on-site.
XF40: Smart Key With Push-Button Start
Lexus made the jump to a proximity smart key on the XF40. The LS460 and LS460L carry a Texas 4D (4D67) chip, a laser-cut emergency blade, and a CR1632 cell. Walk up, push the button, drive. Programming demands OBD-II access plus server authentication on most years, which means real tooling and the right software subscriptions.
XF50: Security Gateway Module
Lexus locked the XF50 down hard with a Security Gateway Module. The LS500 runs an ID47 chip inside a smart key with a laser-cut blade and CR2032 cell. New key registration requires Lexus Techstream with dealer server access, and we tell you that up front. Lockouts, battery swaps, diagnostics: yes. New key programming on the XF50 needs dealer-level tools.
XF50 Current: LS500 Smart Key
The LS500 keeps rolling through 2026 on the XF50 platform, and we pair these curbside. The 2021 through 2026 LS500 runs a 4-button proximity smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FLC on current builds, with a laser-cut emergency blade and a CR2032 cell. The Texas H-8A transponder registers through authenticated programming we carry on every call, so there is no dealer handoff for a new key.
Identify Your LS Key
A metal key with a chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote. It looks simple but the transponder has to be programmed to your LS400's immobilizer or the car won't start.
Three buttons on the head: lock, unlock, trunk. The blade still inserts into the ignition; the 4D68 chip inside handles the immobilizer handshake every crank.
Proximity fob you keep in your pocket. Press the start button on the dash with your foot on the brake. Laser-cut emergency blade tucks inside for the day the cell dies.
Same shape as the XF40 fob but the security underneath is stricter. The LS500 talks to the Lexus Smart Access System+ and requires dealer server auth for any key registration.
The current LS500 smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FLC on recent builds. Four-button proximity fob, push-button start, laser-cut emergency blade folded inside, CR2032 cell. The Texas H-8A transponder registers through authenticated programming, and the van carries everything to pair one curbside.

Recurring LS Key Problems We See in SD
Smart Key Battery Drain
LS460 owners think the smart key is failing when it is slow drain. The proximity sensor in XF40 fobs (2007-2017) pulls power even on a counter. Shrinking range or sluggish recognition points at the CR1632. We carry cells and test signal curbside.
Transponder Chip Failure
First check on a 2001-2010 LS that cranks but does not start: the transponder signal. 4D68 chips in XF30 remote head keys fail intermittently, especially after years baking in a Rancho Santa Fe garage or UTC deck. We read on-site; dead, clone or replace.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
12V drops, jump or fresh battery, the key will not start. That is ECU sync loss. The immobilizer dropped handshake during the interruption. Affects every LS gen 1997-2020. Diagnostic scan, relearn routine, key and ECU in sync, done curbside.
Laser Blade Wear
Owners blame the smart fob when the door cylinder refuses the emergency blade. High-mileage XF40 and XF50 wear the laser-cut profile, and aftermarket blades are often cut wrong. We cut OEM-spec laser blades curbside to match your lock.
DIY a Lexus LS Key? Reality Check
With one working master in hand, the 1997-2000 LS400 supports an on-board pedal-and-door sequence with tight timing. Doable but finicky. Miss a window and you restart. Three failed attempts and the system locks you out and demands professional reprogramming.
The LS430 needs a PIN code to register a new key, which means professional diagnostic tooling. No DIY on-board procedure exists for this generation.
Your LS460 smart key requires OBD-II programming plus server authentication. Pro tooling only. We handle the full job on-site with Autel IM608 and the right subscriptions.
The LS500 needs Lexus Techstream with dealer server access. No aftermarket tool will register a fresh key on this generation right now. We are honest about that and point you at a dealer we trust when needed.
