2000 Lexus LS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's a single unit where the key blade folds or extends out of the fob body. Your 2000 Lexus LS uses this setup. Inside the fob is a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't registered to your vehicle, the engine won't stay running. The fob also has three buttons for remote functions and runs on a CR1616 battery.

Q: How long does dealer key replacement usually take compared to a mobile locksmith?

For a 2000 LS, the dealer has to source a compatible fob, which on a vehicle this age isn't always sitting on a shelf. Then there's the appointment, the shop time, and getting the car there if you're already stuck without a working key. That whole chain can stretch across multiple days easily. With EZ Car Keyz, it's one visit. I come to you in Ramona Highlands, decode the blade, cut the key, and program the fob on site.

Q: My 2000 LS starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the blade turns and the engine starts, the transponder chip is still doing its job. The remote functions run off the CR1616 battery, and that cell is small enough that it loses voltage before most people expect it to. Swap the battery first. Make sure it's a CR1616 specifically, seated flat against the contacts.

Q: I lost my only key for my 2000 Lexus LS. Can a new one still be made without the original?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2000 LS is a job I handle on site. I decode the blade from the door lock cylinder, so no original key is needed to get the cut right. The transponder programming side requires clearing the old key data and enrolling the new key. Because you're starting from zero with no working key to reference, the process takes a bit longer than adding a spare, but it's fully doable in a single visit.

2000 Lexus LS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A resident up in Ramona Highlands called after he'd been driving on one key for a year. He wanted a spare before the original gave out, and he'd called the Lexus dealer first. The quote they gave him sent him looking for other options.

He had the car parked in his driveway, both of us standing in full sun. I decoded the door lock cylinder to get the key cut data, then cut a replacement blade to match his vehicle. The fob for the 2000 LS is a three-button remote head key, so the blade and the fob are one piece. Programming ran through the OBD port and the whole job was done in one visit, under an hour.

He kept asking if it was really that simple. It is. The dealer was an afterthought by the time I was packing up.

Lexus LS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Lexus dealer to get a replacement key for my 2000 LS?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can cut and program a remote head key for a 2000 Lexus LS on site. The dealer route on a vehicle this age means scheduling time, potentially sourcing an older fob, and paying a premium for a process that doesn't require their bay. The 2000 LS is old enough that there's no secure-gateway access requirement and no factory-credential barrier to programming.
