Out in the Brown Field Area, a woman called about a 2002 Lexus LS with a fob that had seen better days. Hairline crack running from the battery door toward the lock button, rubber so worn the button faces had gone smooth. She said the remote still worked most of the time, but she had to press harder than she used to, and the range had gotten shorter over the past year.

I met her in the driveway. The crack was cosmetic, and the battery door still seated. I popped it open, pulled the CR1616, and the cell was reading low enough that it explained the range issue on its own. But she was right about the buttons. The rubber pad was compressing without making solid contact.
What the dealer missed, or did not bother to say, is that the circuit board in this generation transfers cleanly into a new shell. The transponder chip stays enrolled. You are not reprogramming anything, you are just giving working electronics a new body.
I moved her board into a fresh shell, seated a new CR1616 with the contacts clean, and tested every button from across the driveway before I called it done. Full range came back. Buttons had click again.
She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for a whole new fob when only the housing needed replacing.
