Lexus GS Key Platform, Generation by Generation
S160 Era: Transponder, On-Board Pairing
Lexus tightened security with an ID33 or Texas 11 transponder bonded to the ECU on the second-gen GS. Traditional high-security blade, no push-button start, no proximity. Pairing runs on-board, which means our van handles it in your driveway without dealer access or server hookups.
S190 Era: Remote Head Key
Third-gen GS folded the transponder and the remote buttons into one unit, the remote head key. ID47 or Texas 4C chip riding on the Lexus Immobilizer II platform. Programming runs through OBD-II only, so we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and register the key right there.
L10 Launch: Smart Key Arrives
Fourth-gen GS jumped to a proximity smart key with push-button start. ID47 or ID46 chip, laser-cut emergency blade folded in. Programming demands both OBD-II access and Lexus server authentication, which adds a handshake step. Our subscriptions cover both at the curb.
L10 Facelift: Tighter Security
Same smart key platform, screws turned tighter. ID47 chips and mandatory server authentication for every registration. Covers the GS 300, GS 350, GS F, and GS 450h hybrid. The Autel IM608 plus our Toyota Tech Info subscription handle all of it without a flatbed or a Lexus of San Diego appointment.
Identify Your Lexus GS Key
Traditional metal blade with the transponder chip molded into the head. Twist in the ignition to start. The lock and unlock fob is a separate piece on your keychain.
Lock and unlock buttons baked straight into the head of the key. One piece, no separate remote dangling off the ring.
Proximity fob that lives in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the brake and the start button. A laser-cut emergency blade is folded inside for dead-battery days.
Same proximity smart key shape as 2013-2015 but the security protocols are stiffer. Push-button start, hidden laser-cut emergency blade, server auth required to register.
What a Lexus GS Key Costs in San Diego
Every line price covers the blank, the cut, the programming, and a live function test. Nothing tacked on at the curb.
EZ Car Keyz vs. Lexus of San Diego
Lexus of San Diego runs a service queue and a 5 PM cutoff. We run 6 AM to 11:30 PM, every day, and we close the ticket in your driveway.
Recurring GS Key Problems We Fix in SD
Transponder Failure in Second Gen (1998-2005)
Transponder chips on early GS 300 and GS 430 keys age out. After 20+ years the silicon degrades. Engine cranks, no fire, immobilizer cannot read the chip cleanly. We clone or program a fresh key on the spot, almost always under 30 minutes from arrival.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2013-2020)
Fob dies every couple weeks with a fresh CR2032. The fourth-gen GS proximity loop drains a cell parked too close to the car, common with fobs near a Carmel Valley townhome's garage wall. Move the fob; persists, internals are cooked.
Immobilizer Sync Loss (2006-2012)
Owners blame a dead key when the real failure is ECU sync loss after the 12V dropped or got swapped. Your third-gen GS needs a relearn to re-pair key and immobilizer. We run the OBD-II procedure in your driveway, no parts, just the right tooling and sequence.
Laser Blade Wear (2013-2020)
Fourth-gen GS with door cylinder or backup-start trouble? Check the emergency blade first. High mileage rounds the laser-cut profile and a worn blade refuses the backup cylinder. Blade is the culprit, we cut fresh in the van on the laser machine.
DIY a Lexus GS Key? Reality Check
Yes, with one working master in hand. The pedal sequence (accelerator and brake) with tight timing pairs an extra transponder key. You still need a properly cut high-security blade and the correct chip, so most owners hand it to us anyway.
No DIY path here. The third-gen GS demands a professional OBD-II box to register a new key against the Lexus Immobilizer II system.
No DIY for the L10. Smart key programming runs OBD-II plus Lexus server authentication. Pro locksmith or dealer only.
Same answer for the facelift. No self-programming. Server authentication is required and the protocols are stricter.

Worth Knowing
The second-gen Lexus GS (S160) was a platform twin with the Toyota Aristo V300 Twin Turbo (JZS161), a JDM-only legend packing the 2JZ-GTE and 280 horsepower from the factory. Lexus sold the sleeper sedan with naturally aspirated motors; Japan got the twin-turbo monster on the same chassis.
