2005 Lexus GS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Lexus to the dealer for key replacement?

No. The 2005 GS can have its key system serviced at the vehicle. Dealers often say you need to tow in for all-keys-lost situations, and that is true if you are going the dealer route, because they will not do the work with no drivable car in the bay. But a mobile locksmith with the right equipment handles it at your location. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting days for a parts order.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you can make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We confirm the VIN against the dash plate or door jamb before starting any work. That is the same standard a dealer would hold you to, just done on site in a few minutes rather than through a service desk process. On a 2005 vehicle, it is also worth noting that the manufacturer may no longer have a key code on file through the dealer network.

Q: The fob works fine outside the car but the engine cuts out right after it starts. What is going on?

That pattern, starts then immediately stalls, points to the immobilizer not fully recognizing the key rather than the fob's remote functions failing. The fob and the immobilizer are two separate conversations. The remote side handles lock, unlock, and detection near the door handles. The immobilizer side has to confirm the key's authorization before it allows the engine to keep running.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2005 GS smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence the way some older bladed-key Toyotas do. Registering a new fob requires going through the diagnostic port with professional equipment. There is no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that gets it done on this vehicle. The fob you bought online can still be used, it just has to be paired by someone with the right tools.

2005 Lexus GS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Del Mar Village, right off Camino Del Mar, near the village shops. He had a 2005 Lexus GS with one working smart key, no backup, and he had just gotten a quote from the Lexus dealer for a spare. The number was high enough that he went looking for another option.

He had not lost a key. Nothing was broken. He just wanted a second fob before the first one became a problem, which is honestly the smarter call than waiting for something to go wrong.

I pulled up to his building and got to work at the vehicle. First thing is always confirming the existing key is healthy and the system is reading it normally before I add anything to the mix. His original fob was fine. From there I cut the emergency insert blade to his door lock spec by decoding the lock on site, then paired the new fob through the diagnostic port and registered it alongside the original.

Walked him through every function. Both fobs working, both recognized by the system, original untouched.

He mentioned the dealer quote almost as a footnote. He had already saved a good chunk by the time we were done. But the part that seemed to matter more to him was that he never had to arrange a tow, never had to leave the car somewhere, and the whole thing happened while he was standing outside on a decent Del Mar afternoon.

Lexus GS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call us and we come directly to wherever you are in Del Mar, including Del Mar Village. We carry the tools and blanks for the 2005 GS on the van, so there is no waiting on parts and no tow required. One thing worth knowing on this vehicle: the fob has an emergency insert key built into it.
