Out in Bonita, I pulled up to a driveway where a 2007 GS was sitting with its owner standing next to it looking at the fob like it had personally let her down.
She had already put a new CR1632 in. Still wasn't right. The driver-side door handle touch unlock had been inconsistent for a couple weeks, and now the push-to-start was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting on the center console. Passenger door handle still worked. The fob would lock the car from outside just fine. But stand at the driver door and it acted like you weren't there.
I popped the fob open on her hood and looked at what she had. The shell had a hairline crack running through the back panel, and the battery contact on the negative side had a slight bend from a previous battery swap. The CR1632 she installed was fine but was rocking just slightly instead of sitting flat. Straightened the contact, reseated the battery, closed it back up.
Then I walked every function. Driver handle touch unlock. Passenger handle. All four buttons. Push-to-start from the driver seat. Walked it twice.
It came back clean. The intermittent driver handle was the tilted contact killing signal consistency, not the door, not the immobilizer, not anything deeper.
She had already called the dealer before she called me. They quoted a full fob replacement and said it would take several days because of parts ordering. She was relieved it didn't come to that. I was just glad I could show her exactly what was wrong before touching anything.
