2020 Lexus GS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does the programming actually take once you're at my car?

Depends on the situation. If you have a working key and just need a spare added, the registration process is quick once we're connected, typically well under 30 minutes start to finish including testing. All-keys-lost is a different story. The immobilizer on this system runs a timed security delay before it will accept new keys, which adds roughly 15 to 20 minutes of wait time that nobody can skip. Total on-car time in that scenario runs 30 to 45 minutes.

Q: Can you get here and finish the job faster than going to the dealer?

By a wide margin. The dealer's in-bay programming time is roughly comparable to ours, but getting to that point is the problem. You need an appointment, the service department has to confirm fob availability, and on a 2020 GS that's not always a same-day thing. We carry stock for this vehicle on every call. You phone, we come to Bressi Ranch or wherever you are in Carlsbad, and the whole job happens in one visit.

Q: I have one working key for my 2020 GS. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get it done now. All-keys-lost situations on this vehicle are more involved and take longer than a simple spare add. When you still have a working key in hand, the process is faster and cleaner. Owners who wait until the last key fails are also dealing with the stress of being stranded, which makes a rushed job feel worse than it has to be.

Q: My 2020 GS fob works fine to start the car but the door handle touch sensors are unreliable. Is that a fob problem?

Probably not. If the start button recognizes the fob consistently, the key and its communication with the immobilizer are fine. Intermittent touch sensor behavior on the door handles is more often a handle-side issue than a fob issue. It can be as simple as the handle area being dirty or wet, or it can point to the sensor in that specific door handle. Try cleaning the handle surface and retesting.

2020 Lexus GS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad is one of those planned HOA communities where the gate is the first problem before you even get to the car.

A homeowner called me on a Saturday afternoon. His 2020 Lexus GS was sitting inside the community gates, fob completely unresponsive, and the tow company he'd already called couldn't get clearance to come through. Commercial vehicles need prior HOA approval, and a flatbed on short notice on a weekend wasn't happening. He was stuck.

I pulled up behind a resident coming in and parked in the guest area. No flatbed needed, no HOA paperwork, no waiting until Monday when the dealer service bay opened.

I had everything in the van. The fob for this GS is a 4-button smart key running on a CR1632. I connected to the OBD port, ran the registration process, built and tested the replacement fob right there in his driveway. Doors, start button, every function confirmed working before I packed up.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him when he called them first. More than that, his car never left his driveway, and he didn't spend his weekend waiting on a tow that wasn't coming anyway.

The gate was the drama. The key job itself was just the job.

Lexus GS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Lexus GS key after hours or on a weekend?▼

That's actually when most people call us. Lexus dealer service departments run limited Saturday hours and are generally closed Sundays. Lose your only key on a Friday night and the earliest realistic dealer appointment is Monday morning, assuming the fob is even in stock, which on a 2020 GS it may not be. We work nights and weekends because that's when people actually get stranded.
