2001 Lexus GS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in Downtown Fallbrook, early afternoon, parked in a lot off Main. His 2001 Lexus GS had been sitting for about twenty minutes while he ran an errand.
Came back, key in hand, clicked the fob to unlock. Nothing. Tried again. Still nothing. He assumed dead battery and used the key blade to get in manually, started the car fine. Figured he'd deal with it later.
Then a week went by, he got curious, and popped the fob open himself. Wrong battery. He'd gone to a drugstore, asked for a "Lexus key battery," and whoever was behind the counter handed him a CR2032. It physically fit with some pressure but it was sitting crooked against the contacts the whole time.
By the time I got there, the contact on the negative side had a slight bend from the oversize cell pressing against it. I straightened it out, seated the correct CR1616, tested lock, unlock, and panic from across the lot. Everything worked.
He asked how much just to be safe to have a spare made. We handled that too, right there in the parking lot, remote head key cut and programmed on site. He left with a working primary and a backup, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him when he'd called them earlier that week.
The wrong battery in the right slot. That is a more common problem on these than people expect.
