2004 Lexus GS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for this car?

You call, give me your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct remote head key for your 2004 Lexus GS, quote you a price on the phone, and come to wherever the car is. I bring the key blank, cutting equipment, and programming tools. On site, I cut the blade to your ignition, program the transponder so the immobilizer recognizes the new key, and sync the remote functions.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, usually your registration. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify everything before cutting. That's the whole list. If you're doing an all-keys-lost job, just let me know that when you call so I come prepared for that specific procedure rather than a spare-key add.

Q: I have a working key but I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2004 GS remote head key is not self-programmable for the transponder side. The immobilizer registration requires a tool connected to the vehicle. Some older Toyotas and Lexus models from this era have an onboard add-a-key sequence for the remote signal only, but even if you got the remote buttons working through a button sequence, the transponder would still not be recognized and the car would not start.

Q: My 2004 GS starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working suddenly. What usually causes that?

A few common culprits on these. First, the CR1616 battery. It's a thin cell and it drains without much warning. Second, the rubber button cover on the remote head key cracks with age, and once moisture gets in, the contacts corrode. You can sometimes see a faint discoloration on the board. Third, if the remote range dropped gradually before it quit entirely, the battery was likely the issue from the start.

2004 Lexus GS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Fletcher Hills, near one of those side streets that feeds into the hills above El Cajon, I got a call from a guy who had been living with one key for his 2004 Lexus GS for about eight months.

His spare had stopped working years ago and he just never dealt with it. The one remaining key would start the car fine, but the remote buttons were dead. He was manually unlocking every time, figured the battery was shot, bought a replacement, and it still didn't work.

When I got there, he handed me the key and I could see the problem before I even tested it. The rubber button cover had a small tear along the edge, probably from years of keychain pressure, and moisture had gotten into the housing. The circuit board contact for the lock button had a faint green tint. Corrosion from the inside.

I explained what I was looking at. He hadn't noticed the tear at all. We talked through the options: attempt a board clean, or just cut and program a fresh remote head key. Given that the housing was already compromised and this was his only working key, he wanted a new one so he'd have a reliable backup too.

I cut the replacement key blade to match his ignition, programmed the transponder to the vehicle's immobilizer, and synced the remote to the receiver. Tested all three buttons, tested the ignition start, tested it again after a full door lock and unlock cycle.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number for the job that made him put it off for months. Doing it in his driveway cost him a fraction of that. He left with two working keys for the first time in years.

Lexus GS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2004 Lexus GS somewhere for key replacement?▼

Not with us. EZ Car Keyz comes to you, whether that's your driveway, your workplace, or a parking lot in the Fletcher Hills area of El Cajon. The 2004 GS remote head key requires cutting and immobilizer programming, but that's all done on site with the equipment in my van. Dealers will want you to either drive in or, if you're locked out with no working key, tow the car to their service bay and then wait on parts.
