2003 Lexus GS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key, and what makes it different from a regular key?

Your 2003 Lexus GS uses a remote head key, which means the transponder chip and the 3-button remote are built into the same key head -- the part you hold when you turn the ignition. It's one unit. A plain cut key has no electronics. A separate fob setup has the remote on a keychain apart from the key blade. The remote head key combines both into the piece that actually goes in the ignition.

Q: How does what you charge compare to going to the Lexus dealer?

The dealer will order the part, schedule you in, and often can't do same-day. If you're stuck without a working key, you're also looking at a tow on top of whatever they quote. Their pricing on a 2003 GS key covers the part and programming labor at dealer rates. I come to you in Cardiff-by-the-Sea or wherever the car is sitting, do the cut and programming on site, and you're not paying for a tow or a waiting room.

Q: My 2003 GS starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On the remote head key, the transponder and the remote are two separate circuits sharing one housing. If the car starts, the transponder is fine. Dead buttons usually point to the CR1616 battery first -- and that battery is easy to get wrong at the store because it looks similar to thicker cells. Make sure you have the right one and that the contacts inside the key aren't corroded.

Q: I bought a replacement key online for my 2003 GS. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of these keys does have an onboard pairing sequence -- ignition cycling with the door open, that kind of thing -- that some owners have had luck with on the remote side only. But the transponder chip in the key head is a different story. That has to be registered to the immobilizer with the right programming equipment. Without it, the car starts and immediately shuts back down.

2003 Lexus GS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Cardiff-by-the-Sea called me after snapping his key in the ignition of his 2003 Lexus GS. Not halfway in. All the way -- half the blade was seated in the cylinder, the other half was in his palm. He'd already called another locksmith who gave him a phone quote for a full ignition replacement. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing.

I told him to wait.

When I got there, I could see the break was clean and the cylinder wasn't damaged. I extracted the broken fragment without disturbing the wafer surfaces, then decoded the lock from the readings I pulled during extraction. Cut a fresh blade on site, matched it to his lock.

The 2003 GS remote head key is one unit -- chip and remote together in the same housing. Since the fob itself survived the break just fine, I programmed the transponder in the new key blank through the OBD port and paired it to the immobilizer. All of it, right there in the pulloff.

His original lock works with the new key exactly as it did before. No drilling, no cylinder swap, no tow to the dealer. The other locksmith's approach would have replaced parts that didn't need replacing. That's the difference between diagnosing a job and just defaulting to the most invasive option on a phone call.

Lexus GS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Lexus key replacement so expensive?▼

A few real reasons. The remote head key on your 2003 GS contains a transponder chip that has to be paired to your specific vehicle's immobilizer before the engine will start. That pairing requires professional equipment -- it's not a key you cut and hand over. The key blank itself is also a Lexus-specific part, not something pulled off a generic rack. Dealers add labor time, shop overhead, and a parts markup on top of that.
