A mobile locksmith does the same programming work, at your location, without the dealer's overhead. That's where the savings come from. Not cutting corners -- cutting out the middle.

What exactly is a remote head key, and what makes it different from a regular key?

Your 2003 Lexus GS uses a remote head key, which means the transponder chip and the 3-button remote are built into the same key head -- the part you hold when you turn the ignition. It's one unit.

A plain cut key has no electronics. A separate fob setup has the remote on a keychain apart from the key blade. The remote head key combines both into the piece that actually goes in the ignition.

The practical consequence: if the key isn't programmed to your car, it turns freely but the engine won't stay running. The immobilizer cuts it off. The remote functions -- lock, unlock, trunk -- are handled by the same key, so losing or damaging one means you're dealing with both systems at once.

If a fresh, correctly seated CR1616 doesn't bring the remote back, the remote receiver in the car or the remote circuit in the key itself is worth checking. That's a diagnostic, not an automatic new-key situation. Don't spend money you don't need to.

I bought a replacement key online for my 2003 GS. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of these keys does have an onboard pairing sequence -- ignition cycling with the door open, that kind of thing -- that some owners have had luck with on the remote side only. But the transponder chip in the key head is a different story. That has to be registered to the immobilizer with the right programming equipment. Without it, the car starts and immediately shuts back down.

So: you might get the remote functions working yourself, but if the key blank you bought hasn't had the transponder programmed, the car won't run. That part still needs a tech with the right tools.
