2000 Lexus GS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from someone over in the Seacoast neighborhood of Imperial Beach. Not a lost key situation, which is what I expected when I saw "2000 Lexus GS" on the screen. It was weirder than that.
He had his key. Car started fine that morning. He swapped the fob battery because the range had been getting short, and somewhere between popping it open and snapping it back together, everything went sideways. Engine would crank but die almost immediately after turning the key. No warning lights he could describe clearly, just a car that refused to stay running.
That pattern points straight at the immobilizer. When the transponder chip isn't communicating cleanly, the engine management shuts things down right after crank. It's a known behavior on this generation.
I checked the key head first. The CR1616 he'd put in was seated slightly off, and one of the internal contacts had a small bend from the pry angle he used to open it. Reseated the battery correctly, straightened the contact, and verified the chip was reading properly with my programmer before we even tried the ignition.
Car started and held. He stood there for a second waiting for it to die again out of habit.
He'd already looked up what the dealer would want just to diagnose it. That number alone was more than what he paid me for the full fix, out in his driveway, same afternoon he called.
