What if I need a Lexus GS key after hours or on the weekend?

That is exactly when most people need one. Lexus dealer service departments generally close Friday evening and run limited or no hours on weekends. If you lose your only key on a Friday night, you are typically looking at Monday morning at the earliest, and that assumes the fob is in stock, which it is not always.

I work nights and weekends in Spring Valley and the Casa de Oro area. Same equipment, same process, no upcharge for the hour. If you are stranded, calling a mobile locksmith is a better path than sitting on a tow waiting for a dealership to open.

How long does the programming actually take once you are at my car?

Adding a spare when you already have a working key is fast. Once I connect to the OBD port and run the registration sequence, the programming itself takes a few minutes. Total on-car time is usually under thirty minutes including testing every function.

All-keys-lost is a different job. The vehicle security system has a built-in delay before it will accept new key registrations, and that timer is not something you can skip. On the GS, that window runs roughly fifteen to twenty minutes on its own, so the total job runs closer to thirty to forty-five minutes. Either way, you leave with a tested key that day.

Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Every time. The dealer's in-bay programming is not the slow part. The slow part is everything around it: calling, getting transferred, scheduling an appointment, arranging a way to get the car there if you have no key, waiting for parts if the fob is not on the shelf. That process can stretch across multiple days.

I carry blanks for the GS on the van. One call, one visit, done the same day. In Spring Valley that usually means you have a working key inside ninety minutes of calling, not ninety minutes of waiting for a callback.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

This comes up a lot. The short answer is: it depends on what you bought.

The 2017 GS smart key cannot be paired with a simple button sequence or ignition trick. It requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. So if you bought a fob thinking you could program it yourself, you do still need a technician.

The bigger issue is whether the fob you bought is compatible. Not every aftermarket or used fob will pair correctly. The factory FCC ID on the fob needs to match the vehicle's system. If someone sold you a fob spec'd for a different model or year, it may not register at all, and you will have paid for a part you cannot use. If you bring what you have, I can tell you on site whether it is workable before we start.

Question 5

My 2017 GS start button is flashing and the car will not start, but the fob seems fine. What is going on?

Accepted Answer

A flashing or pulsing start indicator with no crank usually means the vehicle is not reading the fob, even if the fob feels like it should be working. A few things cause this.

First, try holding the fob directly against the start button when you press it. The GS has a backup reader built into that button for situations where the fob's signal is too weak for the antenna to pick up normally, which happens with a low battery or a shielded key pocket.

If that does not work, the fob battery is the first real suspect. Dead or near-dead cells can still show a faint dash warning or none at all, and the proximity system drops out before the key-low warning even triggers. Swap the CR2032 and try again.

If a fresh battery and the backup-reader trick both fail, you are looking at either a fob that needs to be re-registered or a vehicle-side issue with the antenna or the body control module. That is a diagnostic job and I can run it on site in Casa de Oro without a tow.
