I got a call from a guy in the Millenia neighborhood of Chula Vista. He had just picked up a 2013 Lexus GS from a private party. One key, no spare, and the seller's parting advice was "just go to the dealer."
He did go to the dealer first. They told him to come back in a few days because the fob had to be ordered through the parts department, and the programming appointment was separate from the parts pickup. He was looking at two trips, a wait, and a quote that made him feel like he was buying the car again.

The 2013 GS uses a Smart Key system, so there is no chip to clone the old-school way and no ignition cylinder relearn sequence. Adding a key to this platform requires diagnostic equipment and a connection through the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. I brought the right blank, confirmed the fob matched the factory configuration for his car, cut the emergency insert blade on my machine, and ran the registration sequence.
Both keys worked. Touch sensor on the door handles, start button, lock, unlock. He tested everything twice.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and he got it done the same day without a tow or a waiting room. That spare key is also insurance. If he loses one now, it is an add-a-key job. If he had lost the one he came with, it would have been an all-keys-lost reset, which is a longer, more involved process on this system.
