Out in Bostonia, a guy called me about his 2010 Lexus GS. He said the fob had been acting up for a week: sometimes the door handles wouldn't respond when he touched them, sometimes the start button just blinked at him. He'd replaced the battery twice. Still flaky.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob. The CR1632 inside was seated fine, contacts looked okay. I ran through the door handles, the start button, checked whether the dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning. It was reading the fob. Sometimes. The signal was there but weak, and it would drop if he moved more than a couple feet from the car.
I asked how long he'd had the fob. Seven years, he said. The fob body had a small crack along the seam, barely visible, right where the circuit board sits. The board was shifting inside the housing. Every time the fob flexed in his pocket, the antenna contact moved just enough to cut the range.
I had a replacement fob shell in the van. Transferred the board, reseated everything properly, confirmed the fob was already registered to the car so no reprogramming needed. Walked every function: door handles, start button, lock, unlock, the trunk release. All of it solid.
He'd been ready to go to the dealer assuming it was a programming issue or a dead transponder. It was a cracked plastic shell. Twenty minutes on site in his driveway.
