A Bressi Ranch resident called me on a Saturday afternoon. She had been in the driveway for twenty minutes, fob in hand, getting nothing from the start button. The dash showed a key-not-detected warning. The doors had unlocked fine from the outside handle, so she knew the fob had some life left, but the car would not start.
She had already swapped in a new CR1632 the day before because the range had been getting shorter for weeks. That part was smart. But when I got there and opened the fob housing, I could see why it hadn't fixed anything. The contact clip on the positive side was barely touching the new cell. Previous battery swap had bent it just slightly, just enough that under vibration or a warm afternoon it would lose contact intermittently. The immobilizer loses the signal, the start button stops responding, and suddenly it looks like a major failure.
I straightened the clip, reseated the CR1632 correctly, and did a full button check on the hood. Lock, unlock, panic, and the rear hatch release all came back solid. Push-button start responded on the first press. The key-not-detected warning was gone.
Then I walked every door handle to confirm the touch-unlock sensors were reading the fob at normal proximity range, because on these GS fobs a marginal contact issue often degrades the touch sensors before the start button fully quits.
She had been one phone call away from a tow and a dealer appointment. Instead she was back inside making lunch while I wrote up the call notes in the van.
