A guy in Old Escondido called me about his 2016 LS. He had been carrying a single key for two years and it finally stopped being recognized at the start button. No backup, no spare, just a luxury sedan sitting in front of a craftsman house that wasn't going anywhere.
He had already tried a new battery himself, seated it fine, and the warning still came back. When I arrived and opened the fob I could see why - the battery contact tab had a slight outward set on it, probably from the last time someone pried the case open with a key tip instead of a proper tool. The new cell wasn't making full contact. I straightened the tab, cleaned the contact surface, and reseated the same CR1632 he had just installed.
Back to the door handle, walked every button, tested start. Everything came up clean.
He still wanted a programmed spare while I was there, which is the smart call. Adding a second fob on a working-key job is the easy version of this job - a short programming window, no countdown, no all-keys-lost procedure. He had a working original and a tested backup in about twenty-five minutes total from the time I pulled up.
His neighbor came out and watched the whole thing from the porch. By the end she was asking about her own Lexus.
