A homeowner in Downtown IB called on a Saturday morning. He lived in a gated HOA community, and his 2008 Lexus LS was sitting inside the gates with a dead smart key. The tow company he called couldn't get commercial vehicle clearance from the HOA on short notice, so the car wasn't going anywhere. He asked if I could get in.

The fob had the right battery in it - a CR1632, correct size - but the contact inside had a slight deformation, just enough to let the cell shift under vibration. By the time he called me, the car was showing a key-not-detected warning every time and wouldn't register the fob at all.
I pulled the old fob apart on the hood, corrected the contact, seated a fresh CR1632 properly, and then connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port with a battery support unit holding voltage steady. Re-enrolled the key. Walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock, unlock, the trunk release. All of it.
The car never left his driveway. He asked what the dealer would have said. I told him they'd have wanted the car towed in, then told him to wait on parts availability. He nodded like that tracked with something he already knew.
