2020 Lexus GX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2020 GX?

The programming itself doesn't have an expiration. A correctly registered fob on this vehicle should work for the life of the car. What does wear out over time is the rubber button pad, which can get mushy or stop making contact, and the battery, which on a CR1632 typically lasts one to three years depending on use. We install a fresh battery with every key and use housings that hold up to daily use.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after programming?

Call us. The work is covered. That said, when a recently programmed fob fails on a 2020 GX, the vehicle is usually the starting point for diagnosis, not the key. GX owners on forums have documented cases where a setting in the vehicle's onboard menu had smart key reception turned off or restricted without the owner realizing it.

Q: I have two working keys but I want a third as a spare. Can you add it without erasing the existing ones?

Yes. Adding a key while existing fobs are present is a standard add-a-key job on this vehicle. All registered fobs stay active. The process goes through the diagnostic port and takes around 30 to 45 minutes on site. The only time existing keys get erased is in an all-keys-lost situation, where the system has to be reset before anything new can be registered. If you have at least one working key, that reset is not part of the job.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2020 GX. Is that a much bigger job?

It's more involved, but it's a standard job. All-keys-lost on this generation requires resetting the immobilizer through the diagnostic port before any new fobs can be registered. That reset includes a timed waiting period built into the procedure, so the total time on site runs longer than a simple add-a-key. Once the reset completes, we register the new fobs and verify every function before we leave.

2020 Lexus GX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Blossom Valley on a Tuesday afternoon. He'd been driving his 2020 Lexus GX and his fob had been acting up for about a week. Touch unlock on the driver door was hit-or-miss, the range felt short, and that morning the dash had thrown a key-not-detected warning while the fob was sitting right in his hand.

He figured it was a dead battery and swapped it himself. Same symptoms. That's usually when people call me.

When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I opened it right there in the driveway. The new battery he'd installed was a CR1632, correct type, but it was sitting slightly off-center and one of the contact clips had a small outward bow to it, probably from the way the case got pried open. The cell wasn't making full contact on both sides consistently.

I straightened the clip, cleaned both contact surfaces, reseated the battery correctly, and snapped the case back together. Then we walked the whole vehicle. Driver door touch unlock, passenger door, both lock buttons on the handles, and the start button. Everything came back clean.

He'd been one bad battery seat away from calling the dealer and sitting in a waiting room for half a day. I was done in about twenty minutes, and I didn't charge him for a new key he didn't need.

That's the part of this job I don't mind at all.

Lexus GX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lexus vehicles?▼

We use fresh, unregistered blanks that are built to the factory specification for the 2020 GX fob. On a vehicle this generation, the immobilizer is selective about what it will accept, and a used fob from another GX or a salvage pull is permanently bound to the vehicle it was first registered to. No amount of programming will free it.
