I got a call from a guy out in Blossom Valley on a Tuesday afternoon. He'd been driving his 2020 Lexus GX and his fob had been acting up for about a week. Touch unlock on the driver door was hit-or-miss, the range felt short, and that morning the dash had thrown a key-not-detected warning while the fob was sitting right in his hand.
He figured it was a dead battery and swapped it himself. Same symptoms. That's usually when people call me.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I opened it right there in the driveway. The new battery he'd installed was a CR1632, correct type, but it was sitting slightly off-center and one of the contact clips had a small outward bow to it, probably from the way the case got pried open. I straightened the clip, cleaned both contact surfaces, reseated the battery correctly, and snapped the case back together. Then we walked the whole vehicle. Driver door touch unlock, passenger door, both lock buttons on the handles, and the start button. Everything came back clean.
He'd been one bad battery seat away from calling the dealer and sitting in a waiting room for half a day. I was done in about twenty minutes, and I didn't charge him for a new key he didn't need.
That's the part of this job I don't mind at all.
