A body shop over in Lakeside called me after a situation had already gone sideways. A customer's 2014 GX had been in for collision repair, and the shop had brought in another locksmith to handle a replacement smart key after the work was done. That locksmith hit an error mid-programming and walked. The system was now worse than before he showed up. The GX wouldn't accept any new fob registration at all.
The body shop manager was calm about it, but you could tell he was done with surprises. The car was sitting in his bay, the customer was waiting, and nobody knew what the first locksmith had actually done to the module state before he left.
I pulled the smart key control module and went to the bench. Read the EEPROM, found the fault state from the incomplete prior attempt, cleared it, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. Clean slate. The 4-button fob the customer needed paired on the first attempt after the reset, no hesitation from the system.
The whole process ran about 90 minutes, most of that on the bench work. When I explained to the shop what had happened, the manager just nodded. He'd been ready to call a flatbed and send the car to the Lexus dealer for a multi-day wait. That was the path they were mentally prepared for when they called me. It didn't need to go that way.
