I got a call from someone parked in a lot near the Nestor side of Otay Mesa. She had her 2010 Lexus GX, a working fob that morning, and then nothing. Walked back out after grabbing lunch and the door handle did not respond. Key-not-detected on the dash when she finally got in with the emergency insert blade. Car would not start.
She had tried the usual things. Held the fob closer to the start button. Swapped in a CR1632 she bought at the gas station down the street. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was check the battery she had just put in. It was a CR1632 in shape, but it was a house-brand cell with low cold cranking output and one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow from whoever opened it before. Seated it properly and retested. The fob woke up briefly, got through one start, then dropped out again.
That told me the fob itself had a marginal contact issue compounding the pairing loss. I built a replacement fob on site, transferred the emergency insert blade, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, and walked every function before I handed it back. Door handles, start button, hatch button, lock and unlock from distance.
She asked what the dealer would have done. I told her they would have ordered a new fob, scheduled her for a programming appointment, and she would have been without the car for at least a few days. She had been standing in a parking lot in Otay Mesa for two hours already. That was enough waiting.
