Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lexus vehicles?

We use fresh, OEM-spec blanks that match the factory fob ID and frequency for the specific vehicle. That part matters more on Lexus than on a lot of other makes.

Here's why: a used OEM fob pulled from another GX or any other Lexus is almost always a dead end. Once a smart key has been registered to a vehicle, it gets locked to that system. Two different locksmiths can have the right equipment and still not be able to pair it to your car because the fob itself won't accept re-registration. It's a one-way door.

We've seen owners buy what looks like a legitimate OEM fob online, sometimes at a real price, only to find out it's locked to a totaled car somewhere in another state. We start with verified fresh blanks every time so that situation never comes up.

Question 2

How long will a replacement key last?

The programming doesn't wear out. Once a fob is registered to your GX's immobilizer, that pairing holds for the life of the vehicle. What actually wears out are the rubber button pads and the battery.

CR1632 cells in a fob that gets used daily typically last one to two years before range starts dropping. A worn button pad is the other common complaint after a few years of use, buttons that feel mushy or need a harder press than they used to. That's a shell issue, not a programming issue, and it's an easy fix.

We install a fresh battery with every key we make. After that, just don't pry the fob open with a screwdriver when the battery eventually needs changing. That bent-contact situation is more common than it should be.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

That said, if a correctly programmed fob goes dead a few weeks in, the cause is almost always something on the vehicle side, not the key itself. GX owners have flagged this in forums more than once: there's a setting accessible through the vehicle's information display that controls smart key system behavior, and it can get toggled off, sometimes without the owner realizing it. If the system gets switched off in that menu, no fob will work, including a brand new OEM one.

Other times it's something simpler. A reseating of the battery with clean contacts fixes it.

We don't just hand you another fob and call it done. We figure out what actually happened.

Question 4

I have two working fobs but one barely works past arm's length. Does it need to be reprogrammed?

Reprogramming won't fix range. If one fob reaches twenty feet and the other reaches six inches, that's not a registration problem. The pairing is fine. What you're dealing with is almost always a weak battery, a bent internal contact, or a cracked fob body letting the shell flex around the circuit board.

Open that short-range fob and look at it before assuming anything else is wrong. A shell that got pried open or dropped hard can put just enough pressure on the board to cut the antenna circuit. A fresh CR1632 seated flat against a clean, unbent contact solves the majority of these complaints. If the shell is cracked, a new housing with the original board transferred over usually brings range right back.

Question 5

The door handle touch unlock stopped working but the start button still sees my key. What's going on?

If the start button recognizes the fob and the vehicle runs normally, the smart key system is doing its job. The touch-sensor unlock on the door handle is a separate piece of the circuit, and it fails on its own.

First thing to check: wipe the handle area down. Road film and moisture can interfere with the capacitive sensor, especially on a driver's side handle that gets touched a few hundred times a week. If cleaning doesn't change anything and the failure is isolated to one door, that's pointing to the handle sensor or the wiring on that door rather than anything to do with the fob or the receiver. That's a vehicle-side diagnosis, not a key job.
