MKS Key Tech Across the Generation
Launch Years: Remote Head Key
Lincoln kept the 2009-2010 MKS straightforward with a traditional remote head key. Texas 4D (4D63) transponder inside the head, paired with Ford PATS. Twist in the ignition, the car reads the chip, you drive. On-board programming makes this generation one of the simpler ones to work with.
Flip Key Era: 2011-2012
Lincoln moved to a flip key design for these years. Blade folds into the fob body, sleeker pocket feel, but the chip is still the same Texas 4D (4D63) on the same PATS immobilizer. Still on-board programming, still no push-button start.
Facelift: Smart Key + Push Start
Lincoln dropped a proximity smart key with push-button start onto the facelift MKS. Same Texas 4D (4D63) chip, but the car now reads it wirelessly. Programming moved to OBD-II only, so a professional scan tool is mandatory. No more simple on-board procedures for the transponder side.
Final Years: SYNC 3 Smart Key
Lincoln integrated SYNC 3 for the last two MKS years and refined the smart key system. Key still runs the Texas 4D (4D63) chip with PATS and push-button start. OBD-II programming is the only path to register a fresh key. Ford IDS-compatible tools on our truck handle these on-site without dealer involvement.
Identify Your MKS Key
Traditional key with buttons baked into the head. Insert into the ignition to start the car.
Blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Press the side button and the key flips out. Still goes into the ignition like a regular key.
Thick fob that lives in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, push the button. Hidden emergency blade inside for dead-battery moments.
Same proximity smart key as 2013-2014 but paired with SYNC 3. Stays in your pocket, push button to start, emergency blade folded inside.

Every quote includes the blank, the cut, the transponder programming, and a live test. Lockouts run $105-$145 in SD.

MKS Key Problems We Solve in SD
PATS Module Failure
PATS immobilizer module on 2009-2012 MKS cars is prone to outright failure. When it gives up, the car refuses to start with a flawless key; theft light stays solid or flashes. Marco diagnoses curbside in Mira Mesa and confirms module vs key.
Transponder Chip Desync
Your 2013-2016 MKS smart key will not start the car and the theft light flashes. Usually right after a fob battery swap or when the cell got critically low. Transponder lost sync with PATS. Quick OBD-II relearn with our scan tool, under 20 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Owners blame a dead 12V when the real culprit is the smart key fob inside the car overnight. On 2013-2016 the proximity loop keeps pinging the fob, draining the battery. Fix: do not leave the fob in the car. Flatbedded in a UTC garage? We verify.
Key Fob Button Wear
We check the membrane first on any 2009-2016 MKS fob with a dead lock, unlock, or trunk button. Almost always the rubber membrane underneath wearing through. Shell swap sometimes fixes it. Sometimes whole fob needs replacing. We carry both on the truck.
DIY an MKS Key? Reality Check
You can pair the remote buttons yourself with Ford's 8-cycle ignition procedure. The transponder chip (the part that actually starts the engine) needs professional programming. We handle that on-site.
Two working smart keys in hand, you can add the remote and proximity functions of a third using the center console pocket procedure. Transponder still needs a professional scan tool. Without two working keys, call us.
Same answer as 2011-2012. Two existing working keys let you pair remote functions on a fresh fob. Transponder programming requires OBD-II access with a professional tool. No shortcuts.
You can pair remote functions with two programmed keys in hand. Full transponder programming requires Ford IDS-compatible equipment through the OBD-II port. We bring that equipment to you.

Worth Knowing
Here is one most San Diego drivers miss: when Ford rolled PATS out across its lineup in the mid-1990s, theft rates on Ford platforms cratered by over 70%. Your MKS still runs a direct descendant of that original architecture, making it one of the longest continuously-deployed immobilizer systems on the road today. The Texas 4D (4D63) inside your fob would have been considered military-grade in 1996.
