I got a call from a body shop in the Naval Base Area of Coronado. A guy had brought his 2010 MKS in for unrelated work, and somewhere in the process another locksmith had attempted a key replacement. The car battery sagged during programming. The immobilizer module hit a fault state, the new fob never enrolled, and the locksmith told the customer the body control module was bad and walked off the job.
The body shop owner was the one who called me. He said the customer was already looking at a flatbed to the dealer and a multi-day wait.
I pulled up and the first thing I did was put my jump pack on the battery terminals. Then I connected my diagnostic equipment and found fault codes sitting in the security system from the interrupted session. Cleared them out before touching anything else. Clean slate.
The fob itself was fine. The programming sequence on the 2010 MKS goes through the OBD port, and once the faults were cleared and voltage was stable, the enrollment ran clean on the first attempt. New fob learned, all functions confirmed, doors locked and unlocked, start button recognized the key.
The whole job was about an hour forty. The customer had been sitting there bracing for a tow and a dealer bill that was going to hurt. He paid a fraction of that and drove out the same afternoon.
The other locksmith wasn't incompetent. He just didn't stabilize the voltage first, and when things went sideways he didn't know how to recover. That recovery step is the actual skill.
