MKT Smart Key Tech Across the Generation
Launch Years: PATS II Smart Key
Three-button smart key with a Texas 4D (ID4D67) transponder and push-button start from day one. Your MKT runs the PATS II immobilizer, so the car will not fire without a properly registered key handshaking with the computer. We pair these through the OBD-II port under the dash. Straightforward work, no server connection needed.
Mid-Cycle: Minor Electronics Updates
A smart key that looks and works almost identically to the launch fobs, still on the Texas 4D (ID4D67) chip and PATS II immobilizer. Lincoln tweaked some electronics but the key system carried over. OBD-II programming handles everything, clean and fast on-site.
Late Years: Crypto 4D Upgrade
Smart key on an upgraded Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D68) chip, adding an encryption layer to the transponder. PATS II is still running the show, but these later cars may require server authentication during programming. Our tools have to verify with Ford's servers before the key goes live. We carry the equipment and subscriptions to handle that at the curb.
Identify Your MKT Smart Key
Proximity smart key. Lives in your pocket or purse; the car unlocks when you grab the handle. Hidden emergency blade folded inside for manual door entry when the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the launch fobs. Push-button start, proximity entry, high-security blade tucked inside. Fully compatible with the 2010-2012 key system.
Looks the same as earlier MKT keys; the chip inside is upgraded to a Crypto 4D. You will not notice anything different in daily use. The difference is under the hood during programming.

MKT Smart Key Problems We Solve in SD
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Fob buttons stop responding, or the car ignores the smart key at the door handle. Intelligent Access proximity sensors drain CR2032s much faster than expected, especially on a garage hook in a Carmel Valley townhome. Store 10 feet away.
Transponder Programming Failures
Root cause on 2016-2019 MKT no-takes is almost always a server auth requirement that surprises people. OBD-II programming needs a precise PIN from the BCM; tool not current or server drops, key will not register. Ford-compatible tools at Rancho Bernardo.
High Security Blade Wear
Before recommending a fresh key, we check the emergency blade first. These laser-cut blades wear faster than expected, and a worn blade will not turn the cylinder when the fob battery dies. Blade is the issue, we cut a fresh one with an HU100 cutter.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Owners blame the fob when the real problem is PATS losing sync after a dead 12V. Common on 2010-2015 cars. Vehicle battery replacement or a hard jump can knock transponder communication out of alignment. Fix is a full OBD-II relearn, not a fresh key.
DIY an MKT Key? Reality Check
Two working smart keys in hand, you can program a third yourself with the on-board procedure. Place the new key in the center console pocket, follow the unlock-brake-lock-brake-start sequence, the car enters programming mode. Maximum of 4 keys total. One key or zero, you need a locksmith.
Same two-key self-programming as the launch years. Two working smart keys needed to add a third. Same steps: console pocket, unlock three times, brake, lock three times, brake, start button. Everything within 30 seconds. Down to one key, (619) 876-1271.
Self-programming still works on these later cars with two existing keys, same procedure. One key or zero, the Crypto 4D chip and potential server authentication make this a professional job. Do not risk bricking the immobilizer.

Worth Knowing
Here is one most San Diego drivers miss: the Lincoln MKT key system is identical to the Ford Flex. Same Texas 4D (4D63) transponder, same fob shell, same OBD-II programming dance. Lincoln took Ford's D3 platform, wrapped it in a luxury cabin and the chrome split-wing grille, and charged a premium for the badge. Under the dash though, your MKT key and a Flex key from a UTC parking deck are full twins.
