2015 Lincoln MKT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2015 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Viejas Area of Alpine, I got a call from a guy who managed a small fleet operation. He had a 2015 Lincoln MKT that another locksmith had already touched. That should have been the end of the story, but it was just the beginning of mine.

The key locked and unlocked the doors fine. Push-to-start worked in the morning. By afternoon the security light was flashing at crank and the car sat there doing nothing. He figured it was an electrical gremlin, maybe a module, maybe something expensive. He had already been quoted a diagnostic fee at the dealer before he called me.

When I got there and started checking, the fob itself was the problem. The previous programming job had used the wrong transponder generation for this vehicle. It passed the initial handshake because that first pairing check is relatively shallow. The deeper verification the vehicle runs over multiple start cycles is what exposed it. That mismatch was why it worked eight times and then stopped.

I pulled out my diagnostic equipment, read what was stored, confirmed what chip generation the system expected, and programmed a new fob with the correct transponder. While I had it open I checked the CR2032 and it was reading low, which was making detection even worse in the heat of the afternoon. Fresh battery, correct fob, proper pairing sequence.

The push-to-start responded on the first try. Security light stayed off.

He asked me what the dealer would have charged just to diagnose it, before any parts. I told him they probably would have started the meter the moment they plugged in. He said he saved a good chunk just by not getting towed there first.
