2018 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach when the call came in. Rideshare driver, sitting at a tire shop, not going anywhere.
He'd already been through it once. Some outfit he found through a cheap Google ad had shown up, taken his money, and left him with a key that half worked. The remote locked and unlocked the MKT just fine. But every time he pressed the start button, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the engine wouldn't turn over. He'd been starting it by holding the fob directly against the start button, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. He'd been driving like that for two weeks.
When he found me through Google Guaranteed, the first thing he asked was how to verify I was licensed. That's a smart question and I don't take it personally. I gave him my BSIS license number right on the phone and told him to pull it up on the state site while we were still talking. He did. That seemed to settle it.
When I got there, the problem was exactly what I expected. The RF side of the fob had been registered, but the immobilizer pairing hadn't been completed. The two aren't the same procedure, and whoever worked on it before either didn't know that or didn't have the tools to finish the job. I ran the full key registration through my programmer, both sides, confirmed all five buttons, and walked him through a few start cycles until the security indicator was behaving correctly.
He asked what the dealer would have charged to fix someone else's mistake. I told him it would have been a real conversation. He laughed. We shook hands and he had a fare waiting.
