MKZ Key Tech Across Four Generations
A2 Platform Era: Standard Blade
You twist this key in the ignition like any other, but the head carries a Texas 4D (4D63) transponder that hands shakes with PATS every crank. Standard blade, CR2032 in the fob, three buttons. Chip fails or the key goes missing, the engine refuses to fire no matter what. We register replacements through your OBD-II port under the dash.
Fusion Platform: High-Security Blade
Lincoln moved to an HU101 high-security blade here, so the key cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. Still on the 4D63 chip and PATS II, still three buttons, still CR2032. The blade requires a specialized cutter, and the security PIN retrieval is more involved. All of that runs on-site with OBD-II programming.
Facelift: Smart Key + Push Start
Lincoln dropped in push-button start and a proximity smart key. The MKZ now reads the fob in your pocket and lets you walk up, unlock, and start without pulling anything out. Same 4D63 chip, same CR2032, same three buttons, but pairing requires advanced tools like the Xhorse VVDI or Autel IM608.
Final Years: Same Smart Key
Final production kept the same smart key setup: push-button start, 4D63 chip, high-security blade, PATS II, three buttons. Hybrid variants have slight electronics sync wrinkles, but the key itself is identical. We register these through OBD-II on-site, though some hybrid edge cases may need a dealer follow-up. You hear that before we start.
Identify Your MKZ Key
Traditional key you insert and twist. Remote buttons handle lock, unlock, trunk. Transponder chip molded into the head; the car checks it every crank.
Looks similar to the older key but the blade is thicker and laser-cut, which kills hardware-store duplication. Three buttons, same CR2032, requires professional cutting and OBD-II programming.
Proximity fob you keep in your pocket. The MKZ reads it automatically for keyless entry and push-button start. Small emergency blade folded inside for dead-battery days.
Same proximity smart key as 2017-2018. Push-button start, three buttons, CR2032 inside. The emergency blade tucked inside gets you in the door if the fob dies.

MKZ Key Problems We Solve in SD
Transponder Failure (2007-2012)
Key goes in, turns, engine refuses to crank and the theft light blinks. The Texas 4D (4D63) chip in the key head has failed, usually after a decade of dashboard cooking in summer heat across Rancho Bernardo. Marco pairs a fresh key curbside.
Ignition Cylinder Wear (2007-2016)
Owners often blame the key when the real issue is a worn ignition cylinder. The tumblers grind down over time, making the key hard to turn or refusing it. We check the cylinder first because a new key will not fix a tired ignition. We handle cylinder work.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2017-2020)
The proximity fob in your 2017+ MKZ broadcasts low-power constantly. Left in a cupholder or console it can drain your 12V overnight. Feels like a dead car, but it is not the engine or fob. Swap the CR2032 and check the 12V. Still no start, (619) 876-1271.
PIN Code Retrieval Issues (2013-2020)
Some locksmiths show up to a 2013+ MKZ and cannot pull the security PIN needed for programming. Without NASTF VSP subscription and the right tools, the computer will not give up the code. We carry NASTF credentials and Autel IM608 on every call.
DIY an MKZ Key? Reality Check
Yes, with two working originals in hand. You can add a third using the Ford PATS two-key method: cycle each existing key in the ignition in sequence, then insert the new pre-cut key. The security light illuminates for three seconds to confirm. For the remote fob buttons, there is a separate procedure cycling the ignition eight times quickly. One key or zero, this fails and you need professional OBD-II programming.
Zero DIY route. The 2013-2016 MKZ requires OBD-II diagnostic equipment plus a security PIN to register any fresh key. Cannot be done at home, and hardware-store copies will never fire the car. (619) 876-1271.
Same answer as 2013-2016. The smart key system on your push-button start MKZ has zero self-programming support. Every fresh key needs to be paired through the OBD-II port with professional tools.
No self-programming available. The 2019-2020 MKZ requires a licensed locksmith or dealer with OBD-II access to add or replace keys. We handle this on-site in about 30 to 60 minutes.

Worth Knowing
Here is one most San Diego drivers miss: the Lincoln MKZ shares its platform and key system with the Ford Fusion. Under the luxury trim and the chrome split-wing grille, the bones are the same CD3 (then CD4) architecture. Means the Texas 4D (4D63) chip in your $45K MKZ is the same one Ford Fusion drivers in Chula Vista get for $300 at the dealer. Marco cuts both off the same blank, programs both with the same Autel rig, just at half the Lincoln of San Diego ticket.
