A fleet manager near South Oceanside runs a small operation with a few company vehicles, including a pair of 2013 Lincoln MKZs. Both fobs had seen better days. One was held together with electrical tape. The other had a cracked shell and a button membrane that required a hard two-finger press just to lock the doors. When I got to the lot, I pulled both fobs apart on my work tray. The electronics inside were intact on each one. No corrosion, no cracked boards, transponder data reading clean. What they actually needed were fresh housings and new CR2025 pairs, not full replacements. I transferred the internals into new shells, seated fresh cells in both, and ran a quick function check on every button before handing them back.
He handed me back one of the fobs and asked me to also program a spare for one of the vehicles. That one I cut and registered new, on site, through the diagnostic port. Took about twenty minutes for the registration to complete.
His total for all of it was a fraction of what the dealer wanted just for the two worn ones. He made a comment about Lincoln pricing being for the badge, not the hardware. I did not disagree.
