My key fob broke apart. Can you get it sorted on site?

Yes. The 2013 MKT uses a 5-button Smart Key fob, and the housing on these can crack or come apart with daily use. The good news is the internal electronics and the transponder chip usually survive even when the shell is in rough shape. If the internals are intact, I can transfer them into a new shell and retest all five buttons and the proximity range on site. If the electronics are damaged, a full replacement fob needs to be cut and programmed through the diagnostic port. Either way, it's a mobile job and I come to you in Otay Ranch or wherever you are in Chula Vista.

What exactly is a Smart Key and how is it different from a regular key?

A Smart Key is what your 2013 MKT uses. It carries a programmed transponder chip that the vehicle's immobilizer reads to authorize the engine to run. It also handles your remote lock and unlock functions through the five buttons on the fob. It is not a key you insert into an ignition cylinder to start the car in the traditional sense.

Because the fob has to be electronically paired to the vehicle, you cannot just cut a new one and hand it over. The transponder has to be registered to that specific car using diagnostic equipment. That pairing step is what separates a Smart Key job from a basic key-cutting job. If the chip or the fob electronics are damaged, the vehicle will not start regardless of whether the physical shape of the key looks right.

My MKT says key not detected. What do I do?

Start with the fob battery. The factory FCC ID fob on the 2013 MKT takes a CR2032 cell, and a weak one can cause exactly that warning before it dies completely. Swap it out first.

If a fresh battery does not clear it, check whether the car has a backup fob placement spot, typically a designated area in the center console. Placing the fob there lets the vehicle read it passively even if the wireless signal is weak or the fob battery is fully dead. Getting the car started that way confirms the fob is actually still paired and the issue is the battery or the fob's signal.

If neither of those works, the problem could be the vehicle battery running low enough to drop the RF receiver out. Check main battery voltage before assuming the fob itself has failed or lost its pairing. If voltage is good, the fob battery is fresh, and the car still will not recognize it, that points to the fob needing reprogramming or replacement, and that is where I come in.

I lost both keys for my 2013 MKT. Is an all-keys-lost situation fixable without going to the dealer?

It is, and it's a common call. All-keys-lost on the 2013 MKT requires diagnostic equipment to wipe the existing key memory and register new fobs from scratch. There is no ignition-turn or button sequence that does this on a Smart Key vehicle. You need the right tools and access to the vehicle's security system through the OBD port.

The process takes longer than a simple spare-key job because of the reset and re-enrollment sequence involved, but it is a standard mobile job. I bring the equipment to you in Chula Vista, handle the programming on site, and you leave with working keys. The old lost fobs get erased in the process so they cannot be used to start the car.

The dealer route for all-keys-lost on this vehicle typically means a tow, an appointment, and waiting. The mobile route saves you all of that.

Question 5

Does the 2013 MKT have a mechanical backup key inside the fob, and can it do anything useful if the fob stops working?

Yes. There is an emergency insert key blade stored inside the Smart Key fob. If the fob battery dies completely, you can use that blade to physically unlock the door.

Starting the vehicle is a separate issue. With a dead fob battery, use the backup placement spot in the center console so the car can read the transponder passively. That is the intended dead-battery workaround, and it does work on this platform when the fob itself is otherwise functional.

The blade alone will not start the car. The transponder still has to be read.
