2013 Lincoln MKT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a Smart Key and how is it different from a regular key?

A Smart Key is what your 2013 MKT uses. It carries a programmed transponder chip that the vehicle's immobilizer reads to authorize the engine to run. It also handles your remote lock and unlock functions through the five buttons on the fob. It is not a key you insert into an ignition cylinder to start the car in the traditional sense.

Q: My MKT says key not detected. What do I do?

Start with the fob battery. The factory FCC ID fob on the 2013 MKT takes a CR2032 cell, and a weak one can cause exactly that warning before it dies completely. Swap it out first. If a fresh battery does not clear it, check whether the car has a backup fob placement spot, typically a designated area in the center console.

Q: I lost both keys for my 2013 MKT. Is an all-keys-lost situation fixable without going to the dealer?

It is, and it's a common call. All-keys-lost on the 2013 MKT requires diagnostic equipment to wipe the existing key memory and register new fobs from scratch. There is no ignition-turn or button sequence that does this on a Smart Key vehicle. You need the right tools and access to the vehicle's security system through the OBD port.

Q: Does the 2013 MKT have a mechanical backup key inside the fob, and can it do anything useful if the fob stops working?

Yes. There is an emergency insert key blade stored inside the Smart Key fob. If the fob battery dies completely, you can use that blade to physically unlock the door. Starting the vehicle is a separate issue. With a dead fob battery, use the backup placement spot in the center console so the car can read the transponder passively. That is the intended dead-battery workaround, and it does work on this platform when the fob itself is otherwise functional.

2013 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Otay Ranch on a 2013 Lincoln MKT. The owner had a spare fob he'd ordered online and wanted it programmed. Simple enough job on paper.

When I got there, he mentioned the original fob had been acting up for a few weeks before he ordered the spare. Inconsistent range, occasional key-not-detected on the dash, sometimes it would lock the car fine and sometimes it would just sit there. He assumed the original was dying and figured a spare was the smart move.

I checked the vehicle battery first. It was weak, not dead enough to stop a start, but low enough to cause exactly the symptoms he described. The original fob was probably fine the whole time.

We went ahead with programming the new spare anyway since he had it. That part went smoothly with the diagnostic equipment. But I also told him straight: get the vehicle battery replaced before winter because that low voltage is going to keep mimicking key problems, and the next time it might be bad enough to actually strand him.

He appreciated that more than the key job itself. The fob was the reason he called. The battery was the reason he actually needed the visit.

The dealer quote he'd gotten for the spare fob and programming was a lot more than what he paid me. He mentioned it almost as an aside, like it wasn't the main point. It wasn't. The main point was leaving with two working keys and knowing why the first one seemed to fail.

Lincoln MKT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key fob broke apart. Can you get it sorted on site?▼

Yes. The 2013 MKT uses a 5-button Smart Key fob, and the housing on these can crack or come apart with daily use. The good news is the internal electronics and the transponder chip usually survive even when the shell is in rough shape. If the internals are intact, I can transfer them into a new shell and retest all five buttons and the proximity range on site.
