2011 Lincoln MKT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I really have to tow my MKT to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. The dealer makes it sound like the only path, but it isn't. I bring the same diagnostic tools to your location and handle security access, key enrollment, and programming right at the vehicle. No tow, no appointment, no waiting days for parts to arrive. The dealer route is one option. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment is another, and most people in Torrey Pines find it a lot more convenient.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2011 Lincoln MKT?

Plan on 60 to 90 minutes for the full on-site job. The security access step on this smart key system moves faster with professional tools than the old ignition-turn sequences on earlier key-in-cylinder setups, but there is still setup time, the enrollment process itself, and then full testing of every button and the push-to-start function before I call it done. I don't hand you a key and leave until the security indicator proves out correctly and the car starts clean.

Q: My MKT starts fine but the fob range has gotten really short. What causes that?

Nine times out of ten on this fob it's the CR2032 getting weak. A low battery doesn't always kill the fob outright. It usually degrades range first, then starts making the passive entry inconsistent, then eventually the vehicle throws a key-not-detected warning. Swap the CR2032 before you assume the fob or the antenna is bad. When you replace it, make sure the battery is seated flat against both contacts. A slightly cocked battery reads as dead.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and have you program it, or does it have to come from Lincoln?

You can buy an aftermarket fob and have it programmed. It does not have to be dealer-sourced. What matters is that the fob matches the factory FCC ID on your original fob and carries the correct number of buttons. Mismatched fobs from the wrong vehicle can pair on the RF side and still fail immobilizer enrollment, which is exactly the kind of half-working situation that creates headaches.

2011 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a rideshare driver at a shop near Torrey Pines. He had already been burned once.

He'd called one of those "$49 service call" outfits from a Google ad. The guy showed up, charged a lot more than $49, and left him with a key that only half worked. The remote locked and unlocked the MKT fine, but every time he pressed the start button the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the car wouldn't start. He'd been using the dealer's loaner fob just to keep working.

He found me through Google Guaranteed and asked right on the phone how he could verify I was legit. That's a fair question after what happened to him. I gave him my BSIS license number while we were still talking and told him to pull it up on the state website, which he did before he even agreed to a time.

When I got there I went through the full enrollment sequence, not just the remote pairing the other guy had stopped at. I confirmed all four buttons, then ran the start cycle and watched the security indicator prove out clean. No warning on the dash, engine started normally, every function working.

He asked what the dealer had quoted. I told him to call and find out, because whatever it was, he was already done and it cost him a fraction of that.

Lincoln MKT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2011 Lincoln MKT. Can you still make a replacement?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the MKT is a standard job. The process involves clearing the existing key memory through the diagnostic port so any lost fobs can no longer start the vehicle, then enrolling the new smart key from scratch. It takes professional equipment to get security access and complete the immobilizer registration, there is no onboard self-programming sequence for a smart key system like this one.
