2017 Lincoln MKT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I have to tow my MKT to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. Towing is the dealer's default answer, not the only answer. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can come to wherever the vehicle is parked and handle the entire job there. The 2017 MKT smart key system does require professional tools for programming, but those tools are portable. I bring them to your driveway in Casa de Oro or wherever the car sits. No tow, no appointment queue, no waiting on parts to be ordered.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on a 2017 Lincoln MKT?

On this generation of Lincoln smart key, the timing is mostly driven by the security access and enrollment process rather than long wait cycles. With professional diagnostic equipment, the security handshake and key registration complete in a matter of minutes once the tool is connected and authorized. Total on-site time usually runs 60 to 90 minutes when you factor in setup, cutting the emergency blade insert, programming, and testing every function on each fob before I close out the job.

Q: My 2017 MKT fob works fine sometimes and drops out other times. What's going on?

Intermittent detection on these is a known frustration. A few things cause it. First, the CR2032 inside the fob can read as sufficient on a battery tester but still drop under the load of actual RF transmission, especially in colder mornings or after the fob sits unused for a while. Replace the battery and make sure it seats flush with clean contact pressure. Second, interference matters more than people expect.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and just program it myself to save money?

Not on the 2017 MKT. This vehicle's smart key system does not have a DIY onboard relearn sequence. There's no ignition-cycle trick or button sequence that registers a new fob. Professional diagnostic equipment is required to communicate with the immobilizer and enroll any new key, whether it came from the dealer, a locksmith, or an aftermarket supplier online.

2017 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Casa de Oro, right in Spring Valley, from a woman who worked nights at a pharmacy nearby. Before she called me, she'd pulled my license number from the BSIS site and confirmed it was active.

She mentioned that specifically when I picked up. Her last locksmith, different job, different car, had handed her a receipt with no company name on it. Phone was disconnected a week later. After that, she did her homework.

She needed a spare smart key for her 2017 Lincoln MKT. The dealer had already given her a number and a timeline that stretched out a few days, plus a tow because she only had the one working key left.

I pulled up to her driveway in Spring Valley with my programming equipment and the right fob already in hand. The MKT smart key setup requires proper security access through the OBD port to register a new fob, so there's no shortcut version of this job. I connected, worked through the security handshake, enrolled the new key, and verified that both fobs were recognized by the vehicle before I packed anything up. Then I tested everything: lock, unlock, remote functions, start. The car saw both keys without hesitation.

She watched the whole thing from her front step. When I was done she said she'd been bracing for a multi-day ordeal. It took less than an hour in her own driveway. The dealer comparison barely came up. She already knew.

Lincoln MKT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2017 Lincoln MKT. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, and this is a job we handle on site. All-keys-lost on the 2017 MKT means the vehicle's immobilizer has no registered fobs at all, so the security system needs to be fully reset and at least one new smart key enrolled from scratch. That requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port to gain security access, clear the old key memory, and register the new fob.
