2009 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in Casa de Oro, a car service driver flagged me down one morning on a job that had about ninety minutes of breathing room before his first pickup.
He had snapped the key blade off inside the ignition cylinder of his 2009 Lincoln MKS. Half the blade was still deep in the cylinder. The other half was in his hand. He had already tried to fish it out with a straightened paperclip, which made my job slightly more interesting than it needed to be.
I extracted the broken piece without pulling the cylinder or disturbing the wafers. Once the barrel was clear, I decoded the lock from the readings I pulled during extraction and cut a fresh blade on site.
The blade side was the easy part. The MKS smart key system still needs the transponder component properly enrolled, so I connected to the OBD port and walked through the registration process. There is a timed security delay built into the system on this generation that you cannot skip. You just wait it out.
He was back behind the wheel and confirmed road-ready in under an hour. He told me the dealer had quoted him a multi-day wait just to get the vehicle looked at, on top of needing a tow since the car would not start. He saved a good chunk and kept his schedule.
That is usually how it goes with these. The job itself is not exotic. The value is just showing up with the right tools and not making someone wait three days.
