2013 Lincoln MKS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long should a properly programmed replacement smart key last on this car?

The programming itself does not wear out. What wears is the physical shell and the battery contact springs inside. MKS owners on forums frequently report the original factory fobs lasting well over a decade electronically, with shell cracking being the actual failure point. Aftermarket housings are criticized far more often for brittle plastic and button membrane failure. With a quality shell and a fresh CR2032 seated correctly, a replacement fob should serve you for years without issue.

Q: My new key stopped working a few weeks after programming. What's going on?

Call us. Every key we program is covered under warranty. That said, when a correctly programmed fob fails shortly after the job, the vehicle is usually the reason, not the key. On these MKS units, a known pattern involves the immobilizer dropping a fob from memory after a battery disconnect or a module reset event elsewhere in the car. The fob didn't un-program itself. Something in the vehicle triggered a security memory clear.

Q: The start button is flashing or showing a key warning. Is my fob dead?

Not necessarily. When the 2013 MKS loses communication with the fob, it throws a key-not-detected warning on the dash and the start button may flash or refuse to engage. Before assuming the fob failed, try this: hold the fob directly against the start button and press. There is a passive antenna built into the button area that can read the fob at close range even with a nearly dead battery.

Q: I have two keys but one stopped unlocking the doors from a distance. Both still start the car.

That split behavior points to the fob's remote function losing registration while the transponder side stays intact. It happens on these cars after certain module resets or battery events. The fob isn't dead. It just needs to be re-paired to the body control module for the remote functions. A diagnostic re-enrollment usually brings it back. Worth doing before you write off the fob entirely.

2013 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Alpine Village, a woman called me about her 2013 MKS. She'd ordered a replacement fob online after losing her spare, figured she'd find someone to program it locally. Smart move on the sourcing, reasonable plan overall.

When I got there, she handed me the fob still in the plastic packaging. The car had one working key, which made this an add-a-key job rather than all-keys-lost. That matters a lot on these. All-keys-lost requires a full security reset with a timed cycle built into the process. Add-a-key skips that entirely.

I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the body control module, and registered the new fob alongside the existing one. The system accepted it clean on the first attempt. Then I verified every button, walked both door handles for touch unlock, confirmed the start button recognized both fobs, and checked the mechanical backup blade seated properly inside the new one.

From parking in her driveway to handing her two tested keys was about 25 minutes.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I was there same afternoon. She saved a good chunk and didn't have to leave Alpine Village to do it.

Lincoln MKS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key fobs for the 2013 Lincoln MKS?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory FCC ID and button configuration for this exact vehicle. The 2013 MKS fob shares hardware lineage with other Ford Motor Company proximity keys from the same era, so verified blanks sourced through that supply chain program correctly every time. What we avoid are the cheap import housings that forum owners consistently report failing within months, with cracked cases and buttons that stop registering.
