2014 Lincoln MKS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2014 MKS?

The 2014 Lincoln MKS uses what Lincoln calls Intelligent Access. The fob communicates wirelessly with antenna modules around the car to detect when an authorized key is nearby. That's what lets you lock and unlock without pressing a button and what allows the push-button start to work. Inside the fob is a programmed transponder chip tied to your specific vehicle.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2014 Lincoln MKS smart key?

Professional immobilizer programmers with Lincoln and Ford specific coverage. The 2014 MKS is well within the range of tools like the Autel IM series and VVDI-based equipment, which handle key enrollment, all-keys-lost resets, and fob pairing on this platform without needing a dealer. The 2014 model year does not require the secure gateway access or credentialed data retrieval that some newer vehicles demand, so the process is cleaner and faster.

Q: I have a spare fob that came with the car but it stopped working. Do I need a whole new fob or can it be re-programmed?

Depends on what's actually wrong with it. If it stopped working gradually, start with the CR2032 battery. Low battery on these fobs can cause intermittent range loss, touch-unlock going unreliable on one door before others, and eventually a dash warning before it quits entirely. Swap the battery and test all five buttons plus the touch-entry handles. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may have lost its enrollment.

Q: The push-button start stopped recognizing my fob but the doors still lock and unlock fine. What's going on?

This is a known pattern on these cars and it's usually not the fob. The door handles and the start button use separate antenna circuits. A fob that works at the doors but not at the start button points to the start button antenna or the module tied to it, not the key itself.

2014 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a Saturday night, maybe 9pm, when I got a call from a couple near Shadowridge. They'd had dinner and walked out to the parking lot to find their 2014 Lincoln MKS sitting completely unresponsive. Fob did nothing. No lock, no unlock, no response from the push-button start. They assumed something serious had failed and were already talking about leaving it overnight and dealing with it Monday.

I was already in Vista. Fifteen minutes, maybe less.

When I got there, the first thing I noticed was that the fob felt light. Not broken, just dead battery light. I had them try the backup start method, holding the fob body directly against the start button area. The car woke right up on the first attempt. We swapped the CR2032 on the hood of my van, I tested every button, confirmed the proximity range was back, and that was the job.

The moment that sticks with me is the husband saying he'd already googled the dealer's number to call Monday morning. He had no idea a fresh CR2032 and knowing where to hold the fob was all it took. They drove home that same night.

I keep CR2032 cells stocked alongside the key blanks and programming gear in the van. When everything is already loaded, a Saturday night call in Shadowridge is no different from a Tuesday afternoon.

Lincoln MKS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before anyone touches your car. First, look up the business name on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services website. Every legitimate locksmith company in this state carries a BSIS license, and that number should be easy to get on the phone before they arrive. If they hedge or change the subject, hang up. Second, get a firm quote for your specific vehicle over the phone.
