2016 Lincoln MKS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2016 MKS?

The programming itself doesn't wear out. Once a fob is registered to the vehicle, it stays registered. What wears is the physical shell and the buttons. A quality housing on daily use will outlast a cheap aftermarket shell by years. The CR2032 typically needs a swap every one to three years depending on use.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. The work is covered under our warranty. But here's what I've seen: when a properly programmed key stops working weeks later, the vehicle is usually the cause, not the key. The immobilizer can throw a fault that has nothing to do with the key itself. A bad ground, a module losing power intermittently, or a low 12V battery dragging the system down will all look like a key problem from the outside.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 MKS. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2016 MKS Smart Key system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Programming a new fob to this vehicle requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, it still needs a technician with the right tools to pair it. The fob you have is just a blank until it's registered to your car's immobilizer.

Q: My MKS key fob range has gotten really short. Is the fob failing?

Short range is usually the CR2032 running low. Swap it first. If range doesn't recover after a fresh battery with the contacts cleaned and seated correctly, the next thing to check is whether the vehicle's antenna module is performing consistently. Forum threads on this generation of Lincoln flagged that a weak 12V system affects the receiver side, not just the fob side.

2016 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from Eden Gardens early on a weekday. A driver had a 2016 Lincoln MKS and both of his smart fobs had stopped being recognized. Car wouldn't start, wouldn't unlock from the handle. He had one fob in his hand and one in his bag, and neither one worked.

He had already swapped the CR2032 in the fob he used daily. Didn't help.

When I arrived, first thing I did was put a meter on the 12V battery. It read low enough under load to explain everything. The RF receiver module was dropping out under that voltage, and the car just wasn't seeing either fob. He had two perfectly good keys and a vehicle that couldn't talk to them.

We got the battery situation sorted on site. Both fobs came back immediately. He had been one step away from calling a dealer and sitting on a multi-day wait for a module diagnosis he didn't need.

The human moment was him standing there looking at the fobs working again and saying he had already mentally budgeted for a tow. He saved a good chunk just by having someone come out and actually test the system before replacing parts.

Lincoln MKS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lincoln vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory FCC ID, the correct transponder chip, and the right frequency for the specific vehicle. On the 2016 MKS, the Smart Key system is particular about what it will accept during programming, so the blank quality matters. The programming process will pair a correctly spec'd key reliably.
