Call us. The work is covered under our warranty. But here's what I've seen: when a properly programmed key stops working weeks later, the vehicle is usually the cause, not the key. The immobilizer can throw a fault that has nothing to do with the key itself. A bad ground, a module losing power intermittently, or a low 12V battery dragging the system down will all look like a key problem from the outside. We come back out and diagnose the actual fault instead of handing you another key and hoping. If the key turns but the engine starts and immediately stalls, that points to an anti-theft component we need to read and address on site.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 MKS. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2016 MKS Smart Key system does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Programming a new fob to this vehicle requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, it still needs a technician with the right tools to pair it. Short range is usually the CR2032 running low. Swap it first. If range doesn't recover after a fresh battery with the contacts cleaned and seated correctly, the next thing to check is whether the vehicle's antenna module is performing consistently. Forum threads on this generation of Lincoln flagged that a weak 12V system affects the receiver side, not just the fob side. So the fob can be transmitting fine and the car still won't pick it up cleanly past a short distance. If a new CR2032 doesn't fix it, don't assume the fob is dead before someone checks the vehicle side of the equation.
