Smart Key Introduction
Jaguar brought proximity smart key technology to the S-Type, allowing keyless entry and push-button start. Drivers could keep the fob in their pocket and never physically insert a key.
Flip Key Transition
Jaguar moved the S-Type from a traditional fixed-blade key to a flip-style key with the blade folding into the fob body. This combined the remote and key into one unit and made the key more pocket-friendly.
Emergency Backup Period
Smart key S-Type models from this era required learning the emergency start procedure: holding the dead fob against the start button to use the passive RFID chip for starting without battery power.

S-Type Doors Not Locking or Unlocking Remotely
If your Jaguar S-Type key fob buttons are unresponsive but the car starts normally, the RF transmitter portion of the fob may have failed while the transponder chip still works. Try replacing the battery. If buttons still do not work, the fob may need replacement.
Key Not Detected After Battery Swap
On certain Jaguar S-Type model years, replacing the fob battery can occasionally desync the key from the vehicle. If the car shows "Key Not Detected" after a battery change, try locking and unlocking the doors with the physical key blade, then attempt to start. If it persists, reprogramming is needed.
Key Stuck in S-Type Ignition
A key stuck in the Jaguar S-Type ignition is usually caused by a worn key blade, a failing ignition cylinder, or a steering column lock. Do not force it. Call {PHONE} and we will extract the key and diagnose the issue on-site.
Can You Program a S-Type Key Yourself?
Jaguar S-Type: This model uses encrypted smart key communication that requires server-authenticated programming. No DIY or on-board method exists.
Jaguar S-Type: Fob button programming can be done at home. Enter the vehicle, close all doors, insert key in ignition, cycle ON-OFF the specified number of times, then press LOCK on new fob. Transponder pairing still requires a locksmith.
Jaguar S-Type: No self-programming. Jaguar uses a proprietary encryption handshake that changes per vehicle. Even having the correct blank is not enough — the programming must go through authorized tools.
