Jaguar key programming isn't a dealer-only procedure on most models from the mid-2000s through the late 2010s. The car's KVM or immobilizer checks the smart fob through an encrypted exchange. Programming a new key means reading that module, calculating the security codes, and writing the correct data to a blank fob. I do it through the OBD port or, when needed, directly from the KVM module on my bench.
A watch dealer at his vintage watch shop in San Diego on a Saturday afternoon was certain his 2005 Jaguar S-Type needed the dealer for a new key. His regular mechanic had told him Jaguar keys were "dealer-locked" and no one else could touch them. That was true on a handful of early models. It wasn't true on his.
I met him at the shop. I used my VVDI Key Tool to generate a new transponder chip matched to his car's immobilizer. His Remote Flip Key, FCC ID NHVWB1U241, was a 4-button remote-head key that I programmed, cut, and tested right there in his lot.
His car sat in the same spot and he paid about $269. Dealer wanted $503 and a weekday appointment. The car doesn't know whether the key was programmed at a Jaguar service center or next to a display case of vintage watches.
