I was out in Ramona Highlands on a Tuesday when the call came in. A woman had a 2008 Jaguar S-Type, and the fob was being held together with clear packing tape. Not a metaphor. Actual tape, wrapped around the housing twice.

All responding cleanly. Then I checked that the vehicle was reading the fob at normal range, not just up close.
She held it in her hand and clicked it a few times, then looked at it like she wasn't sure she recognized it without the tape. The expensive part of that fob, the part that talks to the car, had been fine the whole time. She paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and she left with a solid fob and no tape.
