The 2005 STS launched Cadillac's first PEPS (passive entry / passive start) smart proximity fob with push-button start. Maximum Fobs Learned Error

Your STS RCDLR module only holds four fobs. Hard limit. "MAX FOBS LEARNED" on the DIC means the only way to add a new fob is a full 30-minute relearn that wipes every previously programmed fob. We handle the whole process curbside in one visit.

Programming Mode Interruption

We check for stray learned fobs first on any STS programming call. The RCDLR holds a max of four, and we have rolled to El Cajon to find an owner had a lost fob plus a glovebox spare plus two daily-drivers still in the system. Wipe-and-relearn is the only fix.

Can I program a new key fob to my 2005-2011 Cadillac STS myself? ▼

Yes. If you have a working fob, use the door key cylinder 5-cycle method: insert your mechanical key in the driver's door cylinder, turn to unlock five times within five seconds, then place the new fob in the center console transmitter pocket with buttons facing forward. The DIC will confirm when it is learned. You can store up to 4 fobs total. If you have zero working fobs (US models only), you can use the 30-minute three-cycle relearn, but know that it erases all previously programmed fobs. What if my STS smart key battery is dead and it won't start? ▼

No need to panic. Pull the hidden mechanical blade out of your fob and look behind the driver's door handle for a small cap. Pry that cap off to reveal the keyhole, then use the blade to unlock the door manually. Once inside, hold the dead fob directly against the push-button start with the front side of the fob touching the button. Press the brake and hit the start button while holding the fob in place. The system reads the transponder chip at close range even with a dead battery. If that does not work, the issue may be deeper than the battery, and we can be out to you in Tierrasanta or anywhere across San Diego County the same-day.

Yes, on equipped trims. All STS models from 2005 through 2011 were available with keyless push-button ignition using smart proximity fobs.
