2008 Cadillac STS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Bressi Ranch, I got a call from a guy who had already tried the battery. That's usually where the story gets more interesting.
He had a 2008 Cadillac STS, and his fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks. Short range, occasional key-not-detected warning on the dash, and then one afternoon it just wouldn't let him start the car. He swapped the CR2032 himself, which was the right instinct, but by that point the fob had a second problem: one of the internal contacts had shifted from years of being dropped and pocketed. Fresh battery, same symptoms.
I pulled into his driveway off one of the side streets near the retail stretch and had him walk me through exactly what it was doing. He demonstrated the range issue on the spot, maybe eighteen inches before it responded. That told me enough.
I had a replacement fob with me. The 2008 STS is a five-button key on this system, and I keep stock because these calls come up. I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, ran the immobilizer learn sequence, and registered the new fob to the vehicle. Then the part that actually matters: I walked every function before I called it done. Lock, unlock, trunk release, remote start if equipped, and then a clean ignition cycle from normal distance across the driveway.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. He was back to normal the same afternoon, parked in his own driveway.
That's the job. Nothing dramatic, just done right the first time and finished before lunch.
