The ATS Key System, Year by Year
1st Generation (Early)
Launch-year ATS keys are the easiest of the bunch. The 2013 and 2014 fobs run a Philips PCF7952 (Hitag2) transponder under GM keyless entry immobilizer, talking to the car through plain OBD-II with no server in the loop. Three buttons, push-button start, CR2032 inside, and a hidden high-security blade that flips out the side of the housing.
1st Generation (Mid)
GM dropped in an 8-speed gearbox for 2016 but the key did not flinch. The 2015 and 2016 ATS keep running a Philips ID46 (PCF7937) chip on the same GM keyless entry immobilizer as the launch cars, so the fob, the blade, the CR2032, and the OBD-II programming path are all carried over. Easiest ATS fobs in the lineup if you are not the original owner.
1st Generation (Late)
The 2017 refresh is where Cadillac roped in GM Enhanced Immobilizer and made the tool phone home. Your 2017, 2018, or 2019 ATS runs a Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) transponder and demands a real-time server handshake on every new fob. Our Autel and VVDI rigs hold those subscriptions, so the authentication finishes in your San Diego driveway instead of routing through a dealer service ticket.
Identify the ATS Fob in Your Hand
The launch-year ATS fob is a black plastic proximity remote with three buttons, push-button ignition, and a hidden high-security emergency blade that pops out the side. Keep it in your pocket and the doors hand-shake the car as you walk up.
No physical change from the launch fob. Three buttons, push-button start, CR2032 coin cell, and the same flip-out high-security blade for when the battery quits. If you compare a 2013 fob to a 2016 fob side by side, you cannot tell them apart.
On paper still three buttons, push-button start, and a CR2032 like the older years. Late-run trim packages sometimes shipped with a fresher housing, but the internals are the same. The real change lives in the immobilizer ECU, where the Enhanced Immobilizer now insists on a GM server handshake during the cut-and-program.

ATS Key Issues We Knock Out in San Diego
Smart Key Battery Drain
ATS owners burn through CR2032 cells and assume the fob is bad. It almost never is. The proximity antenna in the door handle and the antenna in the fob ping constantly, draining the cell. Pop the fob in a drawer overnight and you double battery life.
Transponder Programming Failures
On a 2015-2019 ATS that will not take a fresh fob, nine times out of ten the bottleneck is the security PIN. Generic OBD-II tools timeout. We read PIN straight off EEPROM with Autel IM608 or VVDI. Botched prior attempt does not lock us out; we move on.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Jump-start an ATS or run the 12V flat and the BCM and ECU can drift apart on 2013-2017 cars. Fob still locks doors, engine refuses. Transponder no longer authenticated. Relearn through OBD-II, not a fresh key, wrapped under 30 minutes at your curb.
High-Security Blade Wear
Nobody thinks about the emergency blade until the fob dies in the Westfield UTC garage. Then they find the laser-cut blade has been knocking around the housing for years and rounded over. On high-mile ATS it jams the cylinder. We cut a fresh blade on-site.
Can You Program the ATS Fob Yourself?
You can earn the remote-side functions with the door-cylinder learn mode or the 30-minute key-cycle procedure, either with a working fob or from cold. That gets lock, unlock, and panic responding. The transponder side, the actual immobilizer authorization that lets the V6 fire, is still a professional OBD-II job. So a DIY attempt buys you a remote, not a running car.
Carbon copy of the 2013-2014 situation. The door-cylinder relearn covers the remote buttons. The transponder still requires a tool that can read the security PIN and write a key slot, which is not a backyard procedure. Without that second step your fob commands the locks while the engine sits dead.
The remote-button DIY still works on these years. The transponder side gained server authentication, which means even a competent OBD-II tool without a live GM subscription is going to fail at the handshake. That is the line where you stop watching YouTube and dial (619) 876-1271.

San Diego Cadillac Trivia
Worth knowing: the ATS smart key system with passive entry and push-button start was deliberately benchmarked against what BMW was shipping on the 3 Series at the time. GM laid the ATS down on the brand-new Alpha platform and leaned hard into European luxury convention, which is why the ATS ended up one of the first American sedans to commit to proximity key technology as a direct shot at the German competition.
