I got a call from a guy over in the Bancroft area of Spring Valley. He had a 2014 Cadillac ATS, and his fob had been losing range for a couple of weeks. He figured it was the battery. He swapped the CR2032 himself, range came back for a few days, then the same issue. He called me after the second battery swap stopped helping.
When I got to him, he was standing in his driveway looking at the fob like it owed him an explanation.
I checked the contact points inside the fob housing first. One of the battery clips had a slight bend from being pried open, not popped. The new battery was sitting at a subtle angle and making inconsistent contact. Enough to pass power sometimes, not enough to hold it reliably under load. That kind of thing hides behind a fresh battery and makes you think you fixed it.
Straightened the clip, reseated the CR2032, and the range came back clean. I walked every function anyway: lock, unlock, trunk release, remote start button, and panic. Then three starts from distance to confirm.
He mentioned he had also looked into getting a second key cut at the dealer. They had quoted him a number that made him pause long enough to look for another option. When I told him what I charge, he said he wished he had called me about the second key first. That's how we ended up talking about getting a spare programmed on the spot, which I was already set up to do.
