A guy out in Fanita Ranch had been fighting his 2016 Cadillac ATS for weeks before he called me. Every time he parked, the key situation turned into a production: jiggle the shifter, wrestle the wheel a little, pull harder than he should have to. The key was going in fine but coming out stubborn. He had a dealer appointment lined up and was bracing for a big number.

When I got there, I went straight to the ignition cylinder and the park interlock mechanism. What I found was a combination of worn internal wafers in the cylinder and a sluggish interlock sensor that wasn't releasing cleanly. The interlock is what's supposed to free the key when the transmission is confirmed in park -- when that sensor gets lazy, the key binds even if you're doing everything right. Before touching anything mechanical, I backed up the relevant module data so nothing got lost in the process. Then I decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cleaned up the interlock linkage.
After that, his fob paired back up through the OBD port without any drama. I pulled the old wafers out and laid them on the hood next to the new ones so he could see exactly what had been causing the problem. He seemed relieved that it wasn't the whole cylinder.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, which included a full cylinder assembly he didn't need. The key comes out clean now, every time, no ritual required.
