A customer in the Lomas Santa Fe neighborhood of Solana Beach called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had bought her 2015 Cadillac ATS used a couple of years back and got it with one key. She always meant to get a spare cut. Never did.
Then the parking garage concrete made the decision for her.
The fob hit the ground hard, the shell cracked along the back seam, and when she tried to use the emergency blade to get into the door manually, it snapped. Half the blade stayed in the lock cylinder. She was standing there with a cracked fob in one hand and nothing that worked.
When I got there, I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first, then checked the electronics inside the broken shell. The transponder chip was intact. That mattered because a functioning chip meant I could read the existing key data rather than doing a full all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more.
I built her a new working fob using a fresh shell and the salvaged electronics, registered everything to the vehicle through the diagnostic port, cut two new emergency blades by decoding the lock, and walked every function: remote lock, unlock, the start button response, close-range backup start. All clean.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 45 minutes. The dealer had already given her a quote over the phone. She saved a good chunk by calling me instead, and she never had to get the car towed anywhere.
If your ATS fob is cracked or broken, do not throw it away before someone checks the chip. More often than not, the electronics inside survive the fall even when the shell does not.
